Should the Indianapolis Colts pursue Lamar Jackson?

Could Lamar Jackson become the next starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts? While many fans in Indiana would love to see that happen, it likely won’t.

Jackson, who will be the NFL’s biggest free agent this offseason, is expected to remain with the Baltimore Ravens. But if the Ravens and Jackson are unable to come to terms on a long-term contract, the former Heisman Trophy winner could be placed on the trading block this spring.

If Jackson does become available, don't be surprised to see the quarterback-needy Colts show interest in acquiring him.

The Colts were predicted to win the AFC South and emerge as one of the league’s top teams this season. However, they ended up becoming one of the biggest disappointments in football, finishing with a terrible 4-12-1 record.

It’s pretty difficult to win games when your roster lacks a franchise quarterback. Indianapolis has started three different signal callers this season: Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles, and let's be honest, none of those guys are starting-caliber NFL QBs.

Lamar Jackson would be the Indianapolis Colts' best quarterback since Andrew Luck

The Colts had a franchise quarterback in Andrew Luck, but he retired abruptly in 2019. Since then, the team has failed to find a replacement for the four-time Pro Bowler.

We've seen guys like Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Ryan, Ehlinger and Foles over the past few years. Yet, no one has made Indy fans forget about Luck.

If the Colts were to land Jackson, he would instantly become the team's best quarterback since No.12 was in town. The 2019 NFL MVP is undoubtedly one of the greatest running QBs of all time, as he possesses a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons on his resume.

Does it make sense for the Indianapolis Colts to go after Lamar Jackson this offseason?

The Colts have needed a star quarterback for a while now, and Lamar Jackson could prove to be the answer. However, the team would have to give up a boatload of draft picks to acquire him. They'd also have to take on his massive new contract extension.

Indianapolis has gone the veteran quarterback route the past few years, and it really hasn't gotten them anywhere. It would be best for the team to draft a quarterback instead and keep their assets. They can build around that drafted player, whether it's Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud or Will Levis.
