Mengxue Zhang of China bagged the gold medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event of the Rio Olympics 2016 at the National Shooting Range in Rio after obtaining 199.4 points in the final round of the event thereby also creating an Olympics record of bagging the most points in the final round of the event. The silver medal was won by Russia’s Vitalina Batsarashkina who sprung a surprise given her world ranking of 72nd in the event.

But Batsarashkina could manage only 197.1 points and lost to Zhang by 2.3 points. It was Greece’s Anna Korakaki who won the bronze medal after she was knocked out after the 18th shots in the final round of the event.
In the final round, each shooter shoots 20 shots of which the first six shots are taken in a series of 3 shots each. The remaining 14 shots are then shot one by one by each shooter where the last placed shooter is eliminated after the 6th shot onwards.
Spain’s Sonia Franquet was at the top with 59.8 points after the first six shots whereas it was Serbia’s Bobana Velickovic who stood last with 55 points. However, the first shooter to get eliminated was Russia’s Ekaterina Korshunova who could only manage 73.5 points after the first eight shots.
The next shooter to get eliminated at the 7th spot was world number 2, Serbia’s Bobana Velickovic, who could not proceed to the medal shootout as she was the lowest ranked shooter after 10 shots with 96.4 points.
The next shooter to finish 6th in the final round was Spain’s Sofia Franquet as she could not beat Anna Korakaki after the 12 shots’ mark. Next in line to face elimination was Egypt’s Afaf Elhodhod who got only 137.1 points and was hence eliminated after 14 shots.
Going into the final stages of the event, it was world number 5, Mengxue Zhang, who failed to qualify to the podium as she lost to Russia’s Vitalina Batsarashkina with 157.1 points. However, it was the gold medalist Zhang who was on fire since the start of the event and held her nerve to finish on the top.
Her main competition came from the likes of 2nd placed Batsarashkina and 3rd placed Korakaki. Here is the full list of athletes along with their points in the final round of the women’s 10m air pistol event:
