10 things to know about Serena Williams' new boyfriend, Alexis Ohanian

2015 ushered in the best year of Serena Williams’ career, with the 34-year-old winning three of the four Grand Slams and falling two wins short of completing the rare calendar Grand Slam, halted in tracks at the US Open semi-finals by Italy’s Roberta Vinci.And off-court, the World No. 1’s life seems to be also headed in the right direction. It seems like Williams has moved on from rapper Drake to tech stalwart Alexis Ohanian.Here are 10 things to know about Serena’s new boyfriend.

#1 He co-founded the website Reddit

Ohanian is the founder of news aggregator Reddit

32-year-old Alexis Ohanian is the co-founder of the social news wesbite Reddit and is now the Executive Chairman there. His other ventures include thetravel search website Hipmunk andthe social enterprise Breadpig.

#2 A man of many talents

He has expertise in the world of finance, and does a lot of charity work

He has also spent time as a Kiva fellow in Armenia helping people with microfinance.

He led a crowdfunding campaign for the nonprofit Black Girls Code, a not-for-profit organization that focuses on providing technology education to African-American girls ages 7–17 and is a partner at the venture firm Y Combinator.

#3 His goal in life

Ever the philanthropist, Ohanian donates money and works hands-on with several charities.

He says his goal in life is making the world suck less.

#4 He was invited to speak at his alma mater...and was evicted

Ohanian went toHoward High School in Maryland.

He was invited back to give the Class of 2001 Commencement Speech there, and wastold by the principal that he would never be invited back, as she was utterly embarrassed by (his) language.

As a result, he and his father were escorted out of the building by order of the principal and asked not to return.

#5 His idea before Reddit

Reddit was not his and partner SteveHuffmans first idea. They pitched a mobile-phone food-ordering app to startup incubator Paul Graham, who rejected it but Graham was impressed enough by the duo to ask them to find a new idea and come back.

They came back with Reddit, a concept Graham coined as the front page of the Internet, a title it holds to this day.

#6 How much is he worth?

As per Slate.Com, his net worth is around$4.5 million.Thats partly due to the fact that he and co-founder Steve Huffman sold Reddit to Conde Nast in 2006 for an eight-figure sum, just a year after they launched it, and long before it became one of top sites on the Internet.

On the other hand, Serena won more than $10 million in prize money in 2015 alone and has won more than $74 million during her stellar career so far. Shes one of the highest-paid athletes in the history of tennis.

#7 The first thing he did after selling Reddit

Ohanian was close to his mother, who he lost to cancer when he was 25

The first thing Ohanian did after selling Reddit was to call the Washington Redskins ticket office and upgrade his dad’s season tickets. Then he made a donation to his mother’s favourite charity and after handling the press, he shared a pizza with partner and Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman.

Tragically, his mother was diagnosed with brain cancer, and he took a sabbatical from his career to tend to her in her last days. She passed away in 2008.

#8 \"Mayor of the Internet,\" he is an active campaigner

An active campaigner for internet freedom, he opposed US Congress’ SOPA and PIPA

Consecutively in 2011 and 2012, Ohanian was named to the Forbes "30 Under 30" list as an important figure in the technology industry.

In 2013, he was featured as a "champion of innovation" in the 20th Anniversary issue of Wired. Forbes magazine dubbed him the “Mayor of the Internet” for his role in overocming the Congress's Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate’s Protect IP Act.

#9 He\'s also a writer and TV host

Ohanian’s first book – Without Their Permission – did exceedingly well

Ohanian has a published book – Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed which reached No. 4 on the Wall Street Journal's best sellers list for Hardcover Business. He also had his own weekly online series Small Empires with Alexis Ohanian, which featured rising startups in New York City, permiering in 2013 and had a second season in 2014.

He’s since gone on to write another book, this one called Does State Spying Make Us Safer?: The Munk Debate on Mass Surveillance last year, and has said he plans to write more in the future.

#10 He\'s a Serena Williams fan!

Williams was declared Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated

While the pair have not made any official statements about their relationship, Ohanian has not shied away from commenting on Williams’ recent honour of being named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year.

Tweeting about her win, he described his rumoured partner simply as “the greatest”.
