There are an endless number of match types and stipulations in professional wrestling, from cage matches to bras and panties matches, but perhaps none have been as under-utilised, at least in the case of WW, than the mixed tag team match.Of the few that there have been, many of them are pointless and not good, an example being an outageously booked “6-being interspecies” match on an episode of SmackDown earlier this year, in which Cesaro, Tyson Kidd and Natalya took on Los Matadores and El Torito.Other than examples like that, there have been a few entertaining ones, which this articles will look at. So, here are five examples of good mixed tag team matches in WWE history.
#1 Matt Hardy and Lita vs. Tyson Tomko and Trish Stratus: Raw, June 14, 2004
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Around the time Trish Stratus and Lita were high atop the women’s division and feuding like bitter, bitter enemies, Lita had formed an alliance with Matt Hardy (not really alliance, more relationship) and had supposedly had back up, until one night on Raw, when Stratus had brought in her ‘insurance policy’, Tyson Tomko, and invoked a mixed tag team match between the four wrestlers.
It didn’t end well for Stratus and Tomko, though. After Lita gained the upper hand against Stratus, Tomko interfered (illegally), and was quickly taken out by Hardy. Following, Lita hit a DDT on Trish and pinned her for the victory.
The match was fun considering it slightly broke the rules of men not being able to hit women, with Tomko tossing Lita across the ring like he did.
#2 Jeff Hardy & Maria vs. Johnny Nitro & Melina: Raw, January 17, 2007
Johnny Nitro (Morrison) has actually been involved in quite a few mixed tag team matches in his WWE career, including at WrestleMania XXVII. where he, Snooki and Trish Stratus defeated Laycool and Dolph Ziggler.
One particular match which was good, which he was involved in, came on Raw in 2007, where he teamed up with Melina to take on Maria and Jeff Hardy. The match was actually quite heavy on submissions while the two women were involved and was pretty technical.
When both Superstars were tagged in, however, their styles gelled and it was an all out high-flying fest with Hardy taking the upper hand, until Melina got involved and allowed Nitro to regain his footing and attempted to hit a superplex. He failed and was pushed off the top rope.
Hardy was then in a perfect position to hit a Swanton bomb, and executed it to perfection, picking up the win for his team.
#3 John Cena and Trish Stratus vs Glamarella: Raw, December 22, 2008
In a special cameo appearance in late 2008, Trish Stratus teamed up with John Cena to take on the team of Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella, who were together known as Glamarella.
The match was heavily one sided towards Beth Phoenix, until at one point Stratus managed to pull in a bulldog and then tagged in Cena, while Santino was tagged in at the same time, of course.
Cena and Santino, it would seem pretty obvious how that went. As Cena set up Santino for the Attitude Adjustment (known as the F.U. then), Phoenix interrupted, and was hit with a roundhouse kick by Stratus. Cena would then hit the AA and pick up the victory on Santino. This being in Toronto, it was well received by the Canadian fans, seeing Stratus, who is Canadian herself, make an appearance and pick up the win.
#4 Snooki, Trish Stratus and John Morrison vs Laycool and Dolph Ziggler: WrestleMania XXVII
This match was referenced earlier in the article, and this whole slide is dedicated to it. This is also the third match featured in this article which had Trish Stratus in it, this time, also as a one-time appearance.
Fairly said, there was a lot of one-sided action in this match, in which the babyfaces were heavily favoured and Dolph Ziggler was made to look as weak as possible. It was the second last match on the show, surprisingly, and was only three minutes long.
The match was too short to get into a lot of details, but the ending saw John Morrison hit the Starship Pain to Ziggler on the outside and had Snooki hit a cartwheel splash on McCool inside the ring to pick up the victory.
#5 Big E and AJ Lee vs Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn: SummerSlam 2013
SummerSlam 2013 was heavy on big matches, and this match was pretty overshadowed by the likes of CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar and Daniel Bryan vs John Cena. That didn’t take away from its entertainment value, though.
The six-minute match was sandwiched between both of those matches and was entertaining in its own right, which actually did spill out all over the place. While all four contested back and forth in a competitive match, Kaitlyn and AJ ended up brawling outside the ring, where Kaitlyn hit AJ with a spear to take her out. In the ring, it looked as if Big E was going to win, after hitting a strong clothesline, but would quickly be hit by a Zig Zag by Ziggler and pinned to lose.
