5 WWE Superstars Who Could Tell A Good Story In The Ring

Shawn Michaels-A gem of a perfomrer

‘Latino Heat’Being a wrestler is one of the hardest things to do. While it may seem aesthetic and simple, there’s a multitude of things that go into creating a great wrestling match. WWE superstars, as well as the rest of the wrestling world, must create a story in the ring.Recently at NXT Takeover Respect, Sasha Banks and Bayley performed admirably in the main event. It was their second match at consecutive NXT Takeover specials. It was another 5-star match and it didn’t disappoint. Former-WWE announcerJim Ross, , commented on their match and praised both women for their spectacular performance. “An outstanding show on all fronts. Production values and the ‘look’ of the show typical, WWE standards which is always stellar. Solid, logical booking and a fundamentally sound, logical in ring presentation which was refreshing. The matches had the time to develop and how good is it to not have matches be interrupted by commercials? Plus, the show was a manageable two hours which is audience friendly. Sasha Banks is amazing in that she feels like a heel and enjoys finding and refining the nuances of being a pro wrestling villain. She wants to be disliked and not be perceived as cool. Bailey is the likeable, girl next door who has improved immensely since she first arrived at NXT.That’s what hard work and a burning desire to be the best at what one does will do for anyone.” Ross presents a lot of good reasons as to why NXT Takeover Respect was a great show. Banks and Bayley were the primary reason for that. After a splendid evening of wrestling, the Women’s Championship match provided the fans with drama, excitement and a great display of professional wrestling.Women haven’t been portrayed like they are in WWE NXT since Mickie James, Trish Stratus and Lita left the company. Now, Charlotte, Bayley, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks are running the place. The moral of the story is telling a story in the ring is very important in the WWE. There were certain WWE stars who were perfect at being storytellers inside the squared circle and this slideshow takes a look at those legendary figures.

#1 Shawn Michaels

Shawn Michaels-A gem of a perfomrer

Shawn Michaels is considered the greatest in-ring performer of all-time. That isn’t saying he’s the best technical wrestler, which Michaels is not. There are guys who came through the WWE, who had better wrestling skills than the Heartbreak Kid.

However, nobody could touch HBK as a performer. It was the emotion that he displayed, as well as the ability to connect with the fans that separated him apart from the rest of the WWE roster. Even guys like Triple H, the Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Undertaker weren’t on the same level as Michaels.

Some of Michaels’s best matches were against Razor Ramon, Triple H, the Undertaker and Bret Hart. He simply was born to be a sports entertainer before that was the common theme in World Wrestling Entertainment. One of HBK’s greatest moments was against Ric Flair at WrestleMania 25. Everyone knew that Flair was going to retire and the former-WWE champion was going to do that.

Nearing the conclusion of the match, Michaels was about to hit the Sweet Chin Music. Before he connected with the move, he said to Flair, “I love you,” and the entire WWE Universe watched as Flair’s career came to an end. It’s those special moments that made Michaels so good at what he did.

#2 Bret Hart

Bret Hart – Technical maestro

Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were adversaries at one point in their careers, but they also had a lot of similarities in the ring. One, Hart knew how to connect with the crowd. Two, the former-WWE champion could work well with anybody. Three, Bret Hart had the innate ability to tell a sensational story in the ring.

While Michaels was a world-class in-ring performer, Hart was the technical master in the squared circle. That’s where he won over the WWE Universe. It wasn’t that he had the biggest muscles or had the prettiest face.

Hart was a professional wrestler first, then a sports entertainer. Unlike Michaels, Hart wasn’t great on the microphone. He really ascended the WWE ladder by his wrestling skill. There wasn’t another wrestler on the roster that he couldn’t have a good match with. Along with the passion for the business, Hart knew how to create chemistry with his opponents. During the Legends With JBL program on the WWE Network, Eric Bischoff said that he got a shell of Bret Hart when he came to WCW.

However, he wasn’t the greatest technician in the game according to Bischoff. Hart was the greatest in-ring technician for Vince McMahon and the WWE. He was able to accomplish that over many years and put together some exceptional stories in the ring.

#3 Ric Flair

Ric Flair – A natural story teller in the ring

Just like Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair is considered one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the business. Flair is the 16-time WWE champion, which is still the all-time record. Not only that, but Flair’s record may never be broken.

John Cena is the closest with 15 WWE championships. Flair was the master-entertainer. Whether it was him over-selling or pandering to the crowd, the ‘Nature Boy’ just had the “it” factor that so many guys and girls talk about in the wrestling industry.

The next guy on this list also shared the same factors with Flair, whose job was to entertain the masses. His stories in the ring were masterful, as were his mannerisms. A lot of WWE fans get on Flair’s case for selling the moves of his opponents too much. However, that’s what made Flair so unique. Triple H once said during a promo that he could wrestle a broomstick and have a good match.

Even though that was completely satirical, Flair could wrestle a great match with any superstar. The WWE Network has a series called WWE Rivalries which highlighted Ric Flair and another WWE legend. That legend is the next man on this list.

#4 Dusty Rhodes

Dusty Rhodes – A legend who would be missed dearly

Last month, the WWE lost a legend in the industry. Dusty Rhodes passed away, which created a rift in the industry. He didn’t only make an impact in the WWE, but even non-WWE stars tweeted out how he helped them get better.

At WWE NXT, he called the superstars his NXT kids. He had a lot to do with WWE NXT and its growth to what it has become today. During Rhodes’ wrestling days, his smile in the image above told the tale. His feud with Ric Flair is one that will go down as one of the greatest feuds in wrestling history.

It wasn’t a technical masterpiece. For example, a feud between Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit is great because of the wrestling prowess. Rhodes and Flair brought emotion and history to their sensational program. Rhodes was also a master at working the crowd. He’d dance with the audience and know how to sell the building out each evening. That’s because of the story he could tell in the ring. Nobody was better at writing a match or a feud than Dusty Rhodes. His loss will always impact the WWE Universe and the pro wrestling industry in general.

#5 Eddie Guerrero

‘Viva La Raza’

Eddie Guerrero’s 48th birthday would’ve taken place a few days ago. The former-World Heavyweight champion was special and the WWE Universe was distraught when he passed away last decade.

There was something about Guerrero that made the fans stick to their television. For example, Guerrero as a heel still had fans cheering his name. CM Punk, a former-WWE champion, talked about Guerrero in 2013 by saying that he’s the greatest wrestler ever.

"Eddie Guerrero gave me the best advice: It's not about moves. It's not what you do, it's when you do it. He got me listening to the people. He taught me the invaluable lesson of before the show starts and when they drop the lights, that's the first time the crowd's going to erupt. They always erupt. They drop the lights and, 'Oh! Good. The shows starting.’”

"You get that little smatter of applause and cheers and excitement and electricity in the air. I do that every night and I listen. If it's a loud, shrieking kind of noise, it's predominantly women and little kids. If it's a little bit of a roar, I know I'm working for guys my age -- that 18-35 demographic."

There’s a reason why every WWE star still says “Viva La Raza” when it’s his birthday. Guerrero touched all of the fans that watched him wrestle for over a decade. His WWE career got cut short, but that doesn’t diminish what he did during his time. He knew how to tell a story inside the ring almost as good as anyone. He lied, cheated and stole, but captured the hearts of millions all around the world. Guerrero could read the WWE fans inside the arena, which helped tell that story at the end of the night.
