Money spent in the transfer market has always been a major topic for debate with supporters of each clubs mocking others for spending excessive amount of money. Unlike Manchester City and Chelsea who have been consistent money-movers in the transfer market since foreign owners took over the clubs, Manchester United’s transfer policy under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has always been different. The club promoted home-grown, young talent instead of looking overseas for already well-established players. However, following his retirement, Manchester United have been more than lenient with breaking their bank, and bringing in superstars by luring them with a good salary among other advantages, if not Champions League football. To get an idea on how much Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have spent in the last six years, we bring you this slideshow:Note: Figures are courtesy of German website transfermarkt.

#2 Chelsea
Similar to Manchester City, Chelsea’s fortunes improved following the takeover by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in 2003. From spending a then-British record of £50 million for Fernando Torres to becoming the sixth richest team with an annual commercial revenue of £225.6 million, Chelsea are the club who started it all.
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea has been bolstered with the addition of players such as Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis from La Liga, and are held as favourites to win the Premier League this year. However, it is worth mentioning that the Chelsea have still managed to make a profit despite signing a total of seven players this season.

#3 Manchester United
Manchester United were the biggest spenders in this summer window, something that was unheard of during the Ferguson era. Following a disastrous season under David Moyes, United had to break their bank for seven new signings.
Under the supervision of vice-chairman Ed Woodward, the Red Devils pushed their limits in this window, buying some of the top foreign talents after not so much of a fruitful season under David Moyes. Now, these buys are not exactly panic buys. The club had the money to spend, and a change of transfer policy was imminent.
This massive spending frenzy comes after perhaps eight years of recouping money and understanding how the new transfer rules apply to clubs. The signing of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera were somewhat usual, something you could see while Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge. But, Woodward had a plan to re-build the whole squad, starting a team almost from scratch. The team acquired big names like that of Angel Di Maria or Radamel Falcao.
