Pune really were poor away from home, registering only two draws

Strength of character and resilience is needed to win away from home as teams go up against not just their opponents, but their strong support too.We rank the Indian Super League teams based on their away record:

#8 FC Pune City (P7 W0 D2 L5 Pts: 2, GD -9)

Pune really were poor away from home, registering only two draws

Definitely the worst side away from home, David Platt’s FC Pune City managed just two points away from home. They looked tactically very poor and lacked the inspiration to perform well away from home.

Their poor away form started against Chennaiyin FC in a game that they lost 2-1. They then managed a point against FC Goa, before losing 2-0 to the Kerala Blasters.

As much as they were good at home, they kept coming up with awful performances away from home. Against Mumbai City FC they managed a goalless draw before losing three consecutive away games to Delhi Dynamos, Atletico de Kolkata and NorthEast United.

A lot of blame will go towards David Platt, who was at times guilty of rotating his players a little too much and not very wisely at that. Eventually, his team failed to qualify for the playoffs primarily due to their poor away form.

#7 Mumbai City FC (P7 W1 D2 L4 Pts: 5 GD -13)

Mumbai City won their first ever match away from home in ISL history this season

Mumbai City FC also managed just 5 points away from home and suffered 4 defeats. A lot has been said about their manager Nicolas Anelka and his unnecessary tinkering with the starting XI, and that proved to be costly for them.

They suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of FC Pune City in their first away game, but managed a point against Kerala Blasters. After a run of home games, they traveled to the capital to face Delhi Dynamos and managed just a point as the game ended 1-1.

Things turned ugly in their away game against FC Goa as they suffered the biggest loss in the history of the Indian Super League. Zico’s team won 7-0 against Mumbai City FC, with Dudu and Haokip scoring a hat-trick each.

They lost their next two away games against NorthEast United and Chennaiyin FC, before sealing a 3-2 win against Atletico de Kolkata in their last away game, which incidentally was their first away win in the ISL history.

#6 Kerala Blasters (P7 W1 D2 L4 Pts: 5 GD -3)

Kerala's season was basically a struggle and it showed away from home too

Kerala Blasters managed just 5 points away from home and lost 4 away games. The team that started under Peter Taylor were very poor on the road and came up with very ordinary performances.

Their first away game was against defending champions Atletico de Kolkata which they lost 2-1 and they then fell to a 2-1 defeat against FC Goa in their second away game. They marked their third away defeat of the season at the hands of FC Pune City, which eventually led to the sacking of Peter Taylor. Former Manchester City defender Terry Phelan replaced Peter Taylor, but that didn’t change their fortunes too much.

They won their first away game under Phelan 4-1 against NorthEast United FC but then lost 4-1 at the hands of rivals Chennaiyin FC in their next away game.

The Blasters then traveled to Mumbai and came away with a point against Mumbai City FC at the D.Y Patil Stadium. They managed another point in their last away game against Delhi Dynamos in a pulsating encounter that ended 3-3.

#5 NorthEast United (P7 W2 D3 L2 Pts: 8 GD 5)

NorthEast United worked hard away from home, but suffered three losses

The Highlanders managed 8 points away from home thanks to a record of two wins, two draws, and three defeats. They started off poorly and suffered back to back away defeats against Kerala Blasters and FC Pune City.

After a run of home games, they travelled to Mumbai, but came back embarrassed due to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Mumbai City FC. Their first away points came in the capital as they managed a 1-1 draw against Delhi Dynamos.

Their first away win came at the home of defending champions Atletico de Kolkata as they won 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Simao. Cesar Farias’ side then won 2-1 against Chennaiyin FC at the Marina arena. Kamara and Silas found the back of the net for the Highlanders in that match.

They managed just a single point in their last away game against FC Goa, which ended 1-1.

#4 Chennaiyin FC (P7 W3 D1 L3 Pts: 10 GD +3)

Chennaiyin had a volatile record away from home, winning as many as they lost

Chennaiyin FC took away 10 points from their games away from home as they won 3 games, suffered 3 defeats and played out a draw. They first traveled to the capital to face Delhi Dynamos but had to come back disappointed after suffering a 1-0 defeat.

Marco Materazzi’s team then came out on top against FC Goa at the Fatorda stadium as they recorded an emphatic 4-0 win thanks to a hat-trick from Mendoza. After Delhi, they defeated Mumbai City FC 2-0 at the D.Y Patil Stadium, and once again it was Mendoza who scored both the goals for them.

They then suffered a 2-0 defeat against Cesar Farias’ NorthEast United, and managed just a single point against rivals Kerala Blasters. Things started to look bleak for them when they lost 2-1 against Atletico de Kolkata but they won their final away game 1-0 against FC Pune City to secure a place in the playoffs.

#3 Atletico de Kolkata (P7 W3 D2 L2 Pts: 11 GD +3)

Atletico de Kolkata acquitted themselves on the road, displaying great efficiency

Atletico de Kolkata have been very clinical on the road and won as many as 11 points. Their results were three wins, two draws, and just two defeats. They played their first away game of the season against Chennaiyin FC which they won 3-2 when Helder Postiga scored a brace before geeting injured.

The defending champions then traveled to Goa to face Zico’s team, and Arata Izumi’s goal earned them a point at the Fatorda stadium. They then lost away to FC Pune City and NorthEast United, before demolishing Mumbai City FC 4-1 at the D.Y Patil Stadium. Iain Hume scored his first career hat-trick in that game.

Antonio Habas’ team then traveled down south to face Kerala Blasters and came out on top with a 3-2 win. Nallapan Mohanraj opened the scoring before Arata Izumi scored two late goals. They came close to winning their last away game against Delhi Dynamos after Iain Hume put them ahead in the first half, but had to settle for a point.

#2 Delhi Dynamos (P7 W4 D0 L3 Pts: 12 GD -4)

Delhi's defensive record helped them get results away from hom

Delhi Dynamos won 4 away games and lost three to take 12 points on the road. Roberto Carlos’ team started with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against FC Goa before winning their first points on the road against FC Pune City, where they won 2-1.

Goals from Robin Singh and Richard Gadze sealed the win for the Delhi side. They didn’t stop there as Richard Gadze’s late goal sealed another three points for them on the road, this time against Kerala Blasters.

They then lost 2-0 to Mumbai City FC at the D.Y Paatil Stadium, before Dos Santos’ late strike at the Salt Lake Stadium against Atletico de Kolkata earned them three crucial points. They then suffered a humilating 4-0 defeat against Chennaiyin FC in Chennai but came away with all three points from their last away game against NorthEast United.

#1 FC Goa (P7 W4 D1 L2 Pts: 13 GD +3)

FC Goa showed why they deserved to finish top of the table, doing the business away from home

FC Goa have been the best side away from home, as they have collected 13 points on the road. Zico’s team won four games, lost just twice, and managed a draw in their seven away games.

Their first away win came against NorthEast United, which they comfortably won 3-1. Lucca, Reinaldo, and Dessai were on the scoresheet for FC Goa. They then travelled to Mumbai but came back disappointed as they lost 2-0 to Mumbai City FC at the D.Y Patil Stadium.

Their next journey saw them going to South India and that turned out to be fruitful as they won 2-0 against Chennaiyin FC with both Leo Moura aand Jonatan Lucca scoring from the penalty spot.

FC Goa then traveled to Pune and came close to taking away all three points, but Adrian Mutu scored in the dying seconds of the game to earn a draw for FC Pune City. They then suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against defending champions Atletico de Kolkata at the Salt Lake Stadium, their only loss on the road.

Zico’s team won their last two away games, performing very well in the process. An emphatic 5-1 win against Kerala Blasters was followed by a 3-2 win over Delhi Dynamos, with the last win booking their spot at the top of the table.
