Top 5 candidates to win the WWE championship tournament

Lesnar is a great choice to be champion

Big E needs a Big PushWWE has gone into emergency mode due to the injury of Seth Rollins. Rollins is expected to be out of action for six to nine months and he was forced to forfeit the WWE championship. Despite all the criticism that came his way, the fans are rallying behind Rollins due to his injury and he will receive a hero’s welcome when he comes back. But before that, WWE has to sort out the WWE championship scene. They have announced a tournament to crown the new champion but looking at the roster, WWE’s options are limited. We take a look at the best candidates who could win the WWE championship tournament.

#6 Honorable Mention: Brock Lesnar

Lesnar is a great choice to be champion

From what we know, the WWE Championship tournament might stretch to two or three pay-per-views. If Lesnar had enough dates and is open to facing some upcoming talent, then WWE should not hesitate to put the championship on him.

#5 Roman Reigns

Predictable but possible

The reason why Roman Reigns is last on the list is because his win would be too predictable. Everyone knows how high WWE is about Reigns and letting him win the WWE Championship tournament would be an obvious choice.

The title win will only hurt him in the longer run although it might look good when he actually gets his hand on the championship.

Fans will probably turn on him with such a title win since it might look like WWE handed the title over to Reigns; which is clearly not what Vince McMahon wants at this moment. Still, Reigns is one of the best options that WWE has.

#4 Big E

Out of the box choice

Big E might not fit into the entire theme of this list, but if we take a deeper look at things, Big E deserves to be in the main event scene. He clearly has the physique and talent to be a WWE champion and he has shown some great skill with the microphone as well.

Apart from these factors, the best thing about letting Big E win the WWE championship now would be New Day.

The faction is the best creative thing that WWE has at the moment and giving the WWE championship to Big E would make New Day more relevant. They would be taken more seriously and WWE’s wait for an African American Champion would end as well.

#3 Dean Ambrose

perfect anti-hero

Considering the history that Seth Rollins has with Dean Ambrose, Ambrose would be a great choice to be the next WWE champion. Ambrose connects well with the fans and he is a rebel champion that the Authority would hate to have.

This opens the door for another Rebel-Authority storyline for WWE and it would be a great program heading to WrestleMania.

Even if Rollins makes an early return, WWE could put Rollins and Ambrose together in a program and sit back without many worries because these two are guaranteed to deliver on any day. Ambrose could also turn heel and align with the Authority if it’s a swerve that WWE wants.

#2 Sheamus

Mr. MITB and WWE Champion?

Sheamus is currently involved in a midcard tussle but he has the Money in the Bank briefcase in his hands. It would be interesting to see the same superstar hold the WWE championship and the Money in the Bank briefcase and that’s why Sheamus comes into this list.

He is a heel that fits into the Authority’s playbook and can walk right into the void that Rollins left.

Of course, Sheamus will not be as effective as the Architect, but then again, this is a solid option due to the situation. The Money in the Bank briefcase would be the game changer as it adds unpredictability to the angle.

#1 John Cena

The Franchise Player

Hate him or love him, Cena is still WWE’s franchise player. He is currently taking time off due to personal reasons and is expected to be back in time for TLC. There is no news about Cena being injured at this moment, so it would be safe to assume that he is fit to compete.

WWE is in an emergency situation right now and if they want Cena to return, he will return without hesitation.

Not because Cena wants another championship reigns, just because of his commitment to the business. Cena’s return will include the talk for Ric Flair’s record into the tournament which is always a good thing to increase the buzz.
