Top 5 WWE Money in the Bank Winners

Ever since the Money in the Bank match was introduced in WrestleMania 21, it has been a main stay in the WWE landscape producing some intriguing angles.Over the years there has been 13 Money in the Bank winners in the company and almost all of them cashed in the contract successfully to capture the respective title they were after. The WWE raised some eyebrows when they announced that this years ladder match will be for the vacated title but made up for the mistake by the addition of a traditional match for the briefcase. As a new breed of superstars will be fighting to get hold of that briefcase, here is a trip down the memory lane to take a look at some of the best Money in the Bank winners.

#5 Kane

Kane was one of those superstars who forgot the taste of the WWE title until he won the Money in the Bank match in 2010.

The Big Red Monster was put into a match against Christian, Matt Hardy, Big Show, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, Drew McIntyre, and Cody Rhodes and managed to win it despite not having a speed advantage like others in the match.

Kane didn’t waste any time in cashing in the contract as well when he took the title away from Rey Mysterio on the same night making him the first one to cash in just hours after winning. Kane then held the world title for almost five months and had a great feud with Undertaker in between.

#4 Dolph Ziggler

The show off won the Money in the Bank match in 2012 when he defeated Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, Christian, Tyson Kidd, Sin Cara, Tensai, and Santino Marella. It might not be a great list of opponents but Ziggler faced much bigger challenges once he won it.

Ziggler had to put the contract on line against Chris Jericho in a career vs. contract match and walked out of it with the briefcase. The next opponent who challenged Ziggler for his contract was John Cena and the two faced off in a ladder match with Ziggler winning again.

With all these happening, Ziggler held the briefcase for 267 days before he cashed it on Alberto Del Rio to win the championship from the Mexican.

#3 Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan came into the WWE with a lot of buzz backing him due to his success in the Independent circuit. However, the Nexus angle and firing which followed kept Bryan low in the company and Money in the Bank match proved to be a turning point for him.

Bryan won the match defeating Wade Barrett, Kane, Cody Rhodes, Sheamus, Sin Cara, Justin Gabriel, and Heath Slater and was looking to head up the card with that win.

A face at that time, Bryan cashed in successfully against Mark Henry but the match was reversed giving the contract back to Bryan. He then pulled off a big swerve later by cashing in on Big Show and turning heel in the process.

#2 CM Punk

Punk is long gone from WWE but has left a lot of things to cherish. And one of the most notable things he did was win the Money in the Bank twice and that too in consecutive years.

He won the first match in 2008 defeating Mr. Kennedy, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Carlito, John Morrison, and Montel Vontavious Porter and next year he won against Christian, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, Finlay, Montel Vontavious Porter, Kofi Kingston, and Mark Henry.

Punk cashed in his first Money in the bank contract in just 60 days while his second was cashed in after 70 days. The Money in the Bank helped Punk scale the gap that he was having between the going to be a star and being a star.

#1 Edge

One of the main reasons why the concept of Money in the Bank became so successful is Edge. He was the initial winner of the briefcase and did it by defeating Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Shelton Benjamin, Kane, and Christian in that epic WrestleMania encounter.

Edge then had to defend the contract against Matt Hardy in a ladder match and held the contract for 280 days which is still an unbroken record.

Then Edge cashed in the contract on a bloody John Cena who successfully fended off five wrestlers in a grueling Elimination chamber match.

The term, ultimate opportunist and the impact of the Money in the Bank briefcase was exposed to the fans through Edge and this makes him one of the best winners in the history of the match.
