WrestleMania 31: Top 5 Accidents in the history of the pay-per-view

WrestleMania might be called the showcase of immortals, but since Wrestling is an extreme sport that has a lot of risk involved, at certain times, the wrestlers are projected as mere mortals. Accidents in between the squared circle is what projects the larger than life characters called WWE Superstars as regular human beings and we have seen a lot of such instances in WrestleMania’s history as well. Now, seeing a wrestler pick up some injury during a pay-per-view is not a pretty sight for anyone but it is something we cannot avoid with cent percent perfection. As we gear up for another WrestleMania outing, here is a look back on some of the top accidents from the pay-per-view’s history.

#5 Undertaker suffers concussion (WrestleMania 30)

The haunting silence after the Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania 30 is still something that gives Goosebumps to the fans. The streak ending was such a big moment that it split the WWE Universe down the middle. One section supported WWE’s decision to end the streak while the other group though otherwise.

The main motive behind the former category was Taker’s health. He looked worn out during the match and to make matters worse, the Phenom suffered a handful of injuries during the match including a severe concussion.

Taker was kept overnight in the hospital for evaluation which once again showed the seriousness of Taker’s injury. Taker will be back in the ring at WrestleMania 31 and hopefully he will have a safer outing this time around.

#4 Pyro accident (WrestleMania 24)

WrestleMania 24 will be remembered for a lot of positive things. Ric Flair and Michaels had a memorable farewell match, Undertaker defeated Edge to win the World heavyweight title and Floyd Mayweather showed up to defeat Big Show.

Despite all these, one thing WWE wants you to forget about the pay-per-view is the pyro accident that happened. During the final pyro display of the night, the firework on cable above the seats failed and fell into the crowd.

45 fans were injured due to the pyro fail. Most of these were minor injuries but one of the fans had to be rushed to hospital. The company reportedly spent $300,000 on the fireworks that night and was clearly not happy about what happened.

#3 Triple H has a burnt stomach (WrestleMania 29)

Triple H will always be known for his trademark WrestleMania entrances. Hunter came up with some excellent ideas over the years and he is sure to come out with something similar for his showdown with Sting as well.

The entrance plan however didn’t always go well for Hunter. Back in WrestleMania 29, where he faced off against Brock Lesnar in a No Holds Barred match, Hunter used dry ice in the entrance. Unfortunately for him, some of the dry stuck on to his stomach and gave him second degree burns on his torso and arms. Despite this, Hunter went on to complete his match and maybe that’s why they call superstars as immortals.

#2 Brock Lesnar almost kills himself (WrestleMania 19)

How could be a list of WrestleMania accidents be complete without including Brock Lesnar’s shooting star press in it?. The one in Twenty one and one faced Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 19 for the WWE championship and got carried away by the moment.

After a solid spell, Lesnar went on to the top rope and did the unthinkable. He didn’t get enough air on the shooting star press and landed awkwardly on his neck and was knocked out cold. Lesnar managed to end the match despite the concussion and he deserves some applause for that.

It is an accident that no one would wish on their worst enemies and if it was a bit more botched, and then we would have had a different person ending the streak.

#1 Rock tears abdominal muscle, adductor and suffers hernia (WrestleMania 29)

The second edition of Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 29 was probably a match that no one wanted to see. It looked like WWE’s cheap idea of cashing in on previous year’s success but the match quality never lived up to the hype.

It was a forgettable outing for everyone, especially for The Rock. While taking the first attitude adjustment of the match from Cena, the Brahma bull tore his adductor and abdominal muscle. The Rock continued the match despite the injury and it made the situation worse. His muscle was continuously tearing from the pelvis throughout the remaining portion of the match and once the final bell rang, it had completely torn off the pelvis. Now call that fake.
