1872 - Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, Indian cricketer, was born. Ranjitsinhji was a ruler of Nawanagar State who played Test cricket for the England. He also played first-class cricket for Cambridge University, and county cricket for Sussex. He is particularly associated with one shot, the leg glance, which everyone widely believe was invented or at least popularised it. The first-class cricket in India, the Ranji Trophy, was named in his honour in 1935.

1948 - Don Bradman scored 153 in his last first-class cricket innings in England for the Australians against HDG Leveson-Gower’s XI in Scarborough.

1986 - England batsman, Eoin Morgan, was born today. Former Ireland cricketer who is considered as one of the best finishers in the game has played for the likes of England, Ireland, Bangalore Royal Challengers, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Middlesex.

Tennis

1927 – 22nd Davis Cup final: France beats USA in Philadelphia (3-2). It was France’s first Davis Cup win, though it had competed since 1905.

1978 - 98th US Men’s Tennis: Jimmy Connors beats Bjorn Borg. Connors became the 1st player to win US Open on 3 different surfaces.

1990 – 19 year old Pete Sampras beats Andre Agassi to win US Open. First time since 1966 all 8 grand slam Tennis champions were different.

Football

2005 - Sunderland’s 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, stretched their losing streak to 20 matches which became a Premier League record.

1963: George Best makes his Manchester United debut. He would go on to become of the biggest legends of the club.

F1

1961 - Italian Grand Prix, a crash causes the death of German driver Wolfgang von Trips and 13 spectators hit by his Ferrari.

1972 - Emerson Fittipaldi was youngest to win an auto race World Championship.

Baseball

1950 – Joe DiMaggio becomes 1st player to hit 3 HR in a game at Griffith Stadium, home of Washington Senators who today are known as Minnesota Twins.

1961 - Mickey Mantle becomes 7th player to hit 400 HR.

1997 – Mark McGwire joins Babe as only players to hit 50 HRs in 2 consecutive years.
