Ravi Rongali secures 2024 Paris Paralympics quota in Men's Shotput F40

Ravi Rongali secured India a quota in the upcoming Paralympics to be held later this year in Paris. On Sunday, May 19, he finished sixth in the men’s Shotput F40 in the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships in Japan. Rongali threw 9.75 meters to book his flight to Paris.

Denis Gnezdilov from Russia bagged the gold medal with an incredible throw of 11.36 meters. Miguel Monteiro from Portugal got his hands on the silver medal after he threw 10.95 meters. Garrah Tnaiash from Iraq finished third on the podium with a throw of 10.82 meters.


Preethi Pal and Naveen Kumar also impress in World Para Athletic Championships

India’s Preethi Pal impressed one and all in the championship, which is currently taking place in Japan. She booked a berth for the Paralympics after winning the bronze medal in the Women’s 200-meter event. She timed an impressive 30.49 meters.

Zhou Xia from China won the gold medal after putting forth her season-best timing of 29.45 seconds. Gui Qianqian, who also hails from China, clinched the silver medal with a timing of 29.45 seconds, which happened to be her personal best.

Along with Preethi, India’s Nishad Kumar also got a berth in the Paralympics. He won the silver medal in the T47 Shotput event after throwing 1.99 meters, his best performance this season.

USA’s Roderick Townsend put in his season’s best numbers and won the coveted gold medal. He pulled off a throw of 2.05 meters. Russia’s Georgii Margiev got his personal best throw of 1.96 meters, but it could only fetch him the bronze medal.

Overall, India are currently 29th in the medals tally after Preeti Pal and Nishad Kumar finished on the podium. Among the participating nations, China is sitting pretty on the top position with 26 medals (10 gold, eight silver, and eight bronze).
