Multiple National level swimming medallist Saira Sirohi has committed suicide at her Ghaziabad home today. The 16-year old was being touted as a potential Olympic candidate, after notching up more than 110 medals across various national age categories.
She had stunned junior swimming fraternity last year by swimming 38 kilometres for 15 non-stop hours at her school. Saira was found hanging at her home in the afternoon, after coming back from school.
Her father Jaideep Sirohi is a part of the police department, and the cause for the suicide is unknown. There was no note found near her body, hence it is unknown why Saira took such a drastic step.
A source close to the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) said, “It is a very unfortunate incident that has happened. Saira had the potential to represent India, and was one of the most hard-working young swimmers in the country. We are still unable to believe it. She definitely had a chance to participate in the Olympics. In fact, she even told us that she wanted to participate in the 2020 Olympics.”
