Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic established their lead in the race to the ATP finals, as the first quarter of the 2023 season came to an end with the Russian claiming his 19th tour-level trophy.

Medvedev established his presence atop the rankings with a run to the finals of each of the five tournaments he competed in post the Australian Open. He currently leads the race with 3,030 points.

The Russian's title wins in Rotterdam, Doha, Qatar, and Miami, coupled with his finals finish in Indian Wells, netted him 3,030 points. His recent success made up for the deficit caused by his early exit from the Australian Open and catapulted him to the top spot.

Djokovic, who won his record 10th Australian Open title in January, currently ranks second with 2,430 points. He was rendered unable to compete at the Sunshine Double and has made no gains in his points tally since his defeat to Race leader Medvedev in Dubai.

Despite his absence from the two Masters 1000 events, Djokovic's two title victories in Australia cemented the Serb's commanding position in the race.

Carlos Alcaraz is also having quite a season on account of the two ATP tour-level titles to his name in the first quarter of the season.

Notwithstanding the Spaniard's absence from the Australian Open, his win at the Indian Wells Masters and a semi-finals finish in Miami resulted in the 19-year-old rounding out the top three in the ATP Race rankings with 1,910 points in his tally.

Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz's success at the Sunshine Double, coupled with Novak Djokovic's exploits in Australia, gained them the points required to solidify their positions atop the rankings.

However, Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas have also made moves to narrow the gap between themselves and the race leaders.

Sinner looked to be at his blistering best during the Sunshine Double. His progress at Indian Wells was halted by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. The Italian avenged his loss by ending Alcaraz's title defense in Miami before falling to Race leader Medvedev in the final.

His semi-final and final finishes at the Sunshine Double events coupled with a title win in Montpellier have allowed Sinner to bag the fourth spot in the ATP Race with 1,735 points to his name. He currently looms large behind Alcaraz with only a 175-point gap between the pair.

Stefanos Tsitsipas' defeat to Djokovic in the Australian Open final netted him 1,200 points, which has allowed him to maintain his fifth spot in the rankings with 1,570 points, despite early exits from the Indian Wells and Miami Masters.

Other title winners in 2023 - Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie - take up the sixth and eighth spots, respectively, with Australian Open semi-finalist Tommy Paul bagging the seventh spot. They would round out the lineup if the ATP finals were to be held today.

Karen Khachanov (No. 9) and Frances Tiafoe (No. 10) also made moves up the ATP Race rankings with deep runs during the Sunshine Double.
