She talked about the reasons for exiting the hit show with Entertainment Tonight in 2001, saying it was her decision to leave. However, in December 2023, the 90210 alum talked with her former co-star Holly Marie Combs about the real reasons for leaving the show on her podcast.

Doherty mentioned that the “I quit” narrative was “assigned to [her] by other people” but the real reason was that she was fired.

During their conversation, Combs recalled a conversation she had with the show’s producer, Jonathan Levin, about Doherty’s exit. Combs recounted Levin mentioning that Milano had issued an ‘it’s me or her’ ultimatum and had threatened to sue the production for a “hostile workplace environment.”
