American comedian and actor Larry David recently garnered attention with his satirical essay targeting the host of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. The essay, titled “My Dinner With Adolf," was published in The New York Times on April 21, 2025, wherein Larry took a dig at Bill's dinner with Donald Trump, which took place on March 31, 2025.

While Larry made an appearance on Bill's Real Time in 2003, there aren't any prominent instances of the two comedians having animosity or friendship. As for their assets, Larry David has a bigger net worth than Bill Maher.

Bill Maher has accumulated assets worth $140 million, owing to an investment he made in the New York Mets in 2012, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Additionally, he earns $10 million per year for Real Time.

Larry David, on the other hand, has assets worth $400 million. The comedian made his fortune by being the creator and star of Curb Your Enthusiasm and co-creator of Seinfeld.

In the fictional piece, Larry talked about getting invited to dinner with Adolf Hitler as a parallel to the way Bill Maher has spoken of his recent dinner with Donald Trump.

Reflecting on Bill Maher's criticism of Trump previously, Larry David wrote in his fictional account:

“I had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship. No one I knew encouraged me to go. ‘He’s Hitler. He’s a monster.’ But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere."

Talking about meeting Hitler as a satire to Bill Maher meeting Trump, Larry wrote that he was aware he couldn't change Hitler's views, but it was important to talk to the other side, "even if it has invaded and annexed other countries and committed unspeakable crimes against humanity.”

Larry David's satirical remarks on Bill Maher's dinner with Trump explored

During one of his podcast episodes, Bill Maher mentioned that he didn't have any sort of complex thinking that he could heal America. He also clarified that he wasn't going to be healing America. Bill added:

“But if two guys who’ve been at each other for so long—I mean, it’s kind of a Nixon to China thing. I have the credentials. There was nobody who was harder on Trump or more prescient about the fact that he wasn’t going to leave office voluntarily than I was.”

Drawing an indirect parallel between Bill Maher's comment on meeting Trump to that of his fictional dinner with Hitler, Larry David wrote that he found the dictator "quite disarming".

Larry said that he was proud to crack up with a joke about his tan suit and realized that he hadn't seen Hitler laugh before, stating, "suddenly he seemed so human.”

What Larry wrote was similar to Bill Maher's comment on Donald Trump, stating:

“I had never seen him laugh in public. But he does. At himself. And it’s not fake.”

According to The Daily Beast's report dated April 21, 2025, Patrick Healy, the Times' deputy editor, confirmed that Larry David was inspired to write the satirical piece after watching Bill Maher's discussion of his dinner with Trump.

Healy added that Larry wasn't equating Trump with Hitler and that the piece was about seeing someone for who they were without losing sight of that.
