5 Superstars that can bring back the lost prestige of the US Title

The United States Title needs to get its reputation back!
The United States Title needs to get its reputation back!

The United States Championship has been a huge part of wrestling history. Formally being introduced in 1975, this has been one of the most iconic titles.

The United States Title has had a rich history with legends like Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Lex Luger, John Cena, Kurt Angle and many more defending it proudly.

Sadly, the last couple of years haven't been great for the title's legacy. Be it the champions being booked poorly or the championship match being constantly on the pre-show of PPVs, there is a lot that contributed in the declining prestige of this historical title belt.

As much as I agree with the saying that "a title doesn't make a player, a player makes a title", but in this case, it is true that a top-player can do wonders for the United States title which is not getting the proper attention that it should.

In this article, let's take a look at the 5 players who, if given a chance, can bring back the lost prestige of the United States Championship and once again establish it as a top championship on whichever brand it stays.

#5 Andrade

The next big Mexican Star!
The next big Mexican Star!

If you've seen the recent string of matches between Andrade and the King of 619, Rey Mysterio, then you won't be surprised to see him being mentioned in this article.

Andrade has all the tools to become a world champion in WWE, but I believe it is a little too early for him to reach that status. The best way to go forward would be to give him a run with the US Title and see how it goes.

His run with the NXT Championship last year is a good enough reason for the WWE management to show faith in him and make him the US champ.

With his amazing athleticism and the ability to have great matches, Andrade might exactly be what the title needs. Add to it the amazing mic work of Zelina Vega, and you have a complete package in your hands.

My prediction is that he surely will win either the US or the Intercontinental Championship this year. Though as stated, the US title needs him more.

#4 Rey Mysterio

The King of 619!
The King of 619!

As mentioned in the previous slide, the next man who has the potential to give the US Title its glory days back is - Rey Mysterio!

Since making his return last year, the King of 619 has been performing at the top level, giving some of the best matches on WWE television. Looking at his agility and athleticism inside the ring, it's very hard to believe that this guy is 44 years old.

If given a chance, Rey Mysterio would prove to be a great United States Champion in the current scenario. Being constantly carried by heels like Shinsuke Nakamura, Rusev etc, the title needs a top babyface champ whom the audience can get behind and cheer (sorry R-Truth, I'm not talking about you).

I love the concept of US Title Open Challenges and seeing Rey Mysterio continue the trend would make it even more interesting. Imagine the likes of Ricochet, Aleister Black, AJ Styles going one on one with Mysterio for the title.

#3 Kofi Kingston

Does the US Title need some Power of Positivity?
Does the US Title need some Power of Positivity?

The last month has been one of the best (arguably, best) months in the career of Kofi Kingston.

From giving a career-defining performance in the gauntlet match on SmackDown to almost winning the WWE Championship inside the Elimination Chamber, Kofi has been on a roll.

With the audience and the whole locker room behind him, Kofi has a great chance of becoming the WWE Champ in the near future.

But now consider this, with the amount of support that Kofi is getting from the fans, won't putting the US title on him bring the attention of the WWE Universe to the title they've almost forgotten exists?

A solid single run with the US title (or even one with the New Day beside him) would not only solidify Kofi's status as a top superstar but also would help put the Championship back on track.

#2 John Cena

The Champ!
The Champ!

In my list of greatest US Champions of all time, John Cena is at the top. The United States Championship was the first title that he won in WWE.

His last run as the US Champ started when he defeated Rusev for the title at WrestleMania 31. The months that followed saw Cena bring back the US Title Open Challenges, putting on great matches every week.

During this process, he introduced and put over a lot of new and upcoming stars like Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Neville etc.

In the last episode of SmackDown, Truth mentioned John Cena a couple of times during his promo, which made me think how interesting it would be to put the title again on Cena and let him do what he does best, bring the glory and mainstream attention to the title!

Due to his current busy schedule, I do realize that it might not be possible for him to come back for a long US title reign, but one can only hope!

#1 Roman Reigns

The Big Dog has come back to claim his yard!
The Big Dog has come back to claim his yard!

The reason why WWE fans hated Roman Reigns (before his departure last year) is the same reason that could help the United States Championship to get the center stage: He takes all the spotlight!

The main problem with the title currently is that none of the recent champions have been booked properly and given the proper TV time that they deserve as the champ.

A champion is someone who leads the division, whom others can look up to as a motivation to do better. But the current situation with the US Championship is very different.

Putting the title on someone like Roman Reigns would ensure that the storylines for the title are booked properly. Roman as the United States champion could get the title all the attention that it needs. The title would again start meaning a "championship" rather than just a "belt".

Having Roman feud against another top main-event player for the US title would be best for the business.

Let us know how you feel about the current status of the championship and how it can be improved!
