To make it as a wrestler, you have to be tough. Really tough. After all, your body will take considerable damage each and every week, and if you're not prepared to deal with that pain, you're not going to make it for long.

In the WWE, there have been thousands of Superstars to come through the company, and each of whom have had to have a level of toughness ingrained into them, usually through working on the indies or for WWE's developmental promotions.

With that said, there are some WWE Superstars who have been able to be that bit tougher than the rest, and were able to hang with the toughest both on-screen, and off.

Here are five WWE Superstars, who are even tougher outside of the ring.

#5 Brock Lesnar

The reigning defending Universal Champion (though one wonders whether he can still be called defending), Brock Lesnar is perhaps the most successful WWE star to appear in both professional wrestling and MMA.

Joining the UFC after he first left the WWE, Lesnar won the UFC Heavyweight Championship in his third fight, and was a truly dominant champion until he returned to wrestling in 2012.

Even outside of the squared circle and the Octagon, the Beast Incarnate has proved his toughness, battling diverticulitis and coming out on top.

In 2004, Lesnar was even involved in a horrific motorcycle accident, and not only did he survive, but the Beast Incarnate was able to make it to the tryout for the NFL he was heading towards during the crash, on time. Fans may not like him, but they can't deny his toughness.

#4 Dan 'The Beast' Severn

When you've got the nickname of 'The Beast', you better be able to back it up in the ring.

And Dan Severn did just that, after joining the wrestling world in 1991, and MMA three years later.

As a monster in both sports, Seven notched up over a 100 wins in his MMA career, and held the UFC Superheavyweight championship.

Joining the WWF in 1998, Seven entered the company as the NWA Heavyweight Champion, with manager James E. Cornette proudly holding various other titles Seven had captured.

Whilst he sadly never held gold in the WWE, reports suggest that many Superstars were terrified of the Superstar, as they feared of what he would do if they ever crossed him.

With his glassy stare and monster of a moustache, Dan 'The Beast' Severn is one of WWE's toughest stars.

#3 Kurt Angle

Joining the WWF in 1999, Kurt Angle has gone down as one of the greatest Superstars in the company's history.

A multiple-time World Champion, Angle's unique accolade of an Olympic Gold Medal in freestyle wrestling (something no other Superstar can claim) is what has set him apart from the rest of the roster.

In case having a gold medal wasn't proof of his toughness, remember that Angle won the medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games, with a 'broken 'freakin' neck', something far more devastating than a mere broken neck.

What's most impressive though, is that despite his legit toughness, Angle also went on to become one of the funniest men in WWE history, making fans laugh out loud, before shocking them with his abilities, and has earned his WWE Hall of Fame spot.

#2 William Regal

Fans of today may know William Regal as the General Manager of NXT, but there was a time where the Blackpool-born star was known as one of the toughest men in WWE.

Whilst he never reached the main event scene (partly because of real-life issues), Regal is a known tough-guy, growing up on the hard-hitting UK circuit when he was still a teenager.

Upon moving to the United States in the early 90s, Regal would continue getting tougher, as he used his southpaw style (a method taught to all UK wrestlers) to eventually land a job in WCW.

A testament of his toughness came when Regal faced off against Bill Goldberg, where the pair descended into a near-shoot style match, which saw the smaller Regal dominate over the future WWE Universal Champion.

#1 Haku

If you value your nose, don't tick off Haku

He may not have had a historic career in the WWE, but most wrestlers of decades prior will always describe Haku as the toughest man to ever enter the squared circle.

There have been dozens of stories of the Tongan's prowess, including an incident at an airport bar, where the former Tag Team Champion was relaxing with some fellow wrestlers.

After being accosted by a group that insulted Haku, calling wrestling 'fake', the Superstar showed just how real he could be, biting the nose off of one of the gang.

This wouldn't be a one-off instance for the former Meng, who in another story bit the flesh of off someone's back, and also broke another person's front teeth out of their mouth.

Also known as a true professional in the ring, every WWF Superstar knew not to tick off Haku.
