From the Indie rumor mill: Ex-WWE star close to signing with ROH

Could Simon Gotch sign with ROH?

What’s the story?

As reported by Ringside News, former WWE superstar Simon Gotch is supposedly on the verge of signing a deal with independent promotion Ring of Honor. Gotch, who now goes by the name Simon Grimm, was released by the company just a few days after WrestleMania 33.

In case you didn’t know

Gotch, 34, was one-half of The Vaudevillains during his time with WWE. Alongside Aiden English the duo became NXT Tag Team Champions during their tenure in developmental, however they didn’t have the same success on the main roster. Gotch was rumoured to have been quite difficult to work with backstage, with one rumour being that he got into a fight behind the scenes with Sin Cara.

Heart of the matter

Gotch was spotted at an ROH event over the weekend, leading to speculation that he will indeed be signing with the promotion. This has yet to be confirmed or denied by either party, with many fans being split on the decision to sign him. Prior to signing with WWE, Gotch competed for the likes of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Chikara.

What’s next?

We’ll likely know whether or not this story is true over the coming days and weeks, with Gotch seemingly eager to dive straight back into the world of professional wrestling. When it comes to his former partner Aiden English, it seems as if he will continue to be used as a talent who can be a stepping stone for other midcarders.

Author’s take

It’s great to see Gotch stepping back into the ring, but we’re equally as excited to see what Aiden English can do as a solo performer for WWE. Gotch was an extremely capable performer, but he was always considered to be the Marty Jannetty of the group. Perhaps in ROH he can prove that there’s more to him than meets the eye.
