A former WWE Superstar challenged for a title over the weekend but came up short in the match. He's now thanked the fans who support him and apologized for letting them down.

WWE released several superstars and backstage talent following the merger with Endeavor last September. One of the biggest names to be let go by the promotion was Dolph Ziggler, now known as Nic Nemeth. The veteran spent 19 years with the promotion and created many memories for fans.

Nemeth has competed in the independent wrestling scene since his release and has also appeared in TNA Wrestling and NJPW. Last night at the Rebellion pay-per-view, Nemeth battled Moose for the TNA World Championship. Moose retained the title, and Matt Hardy returned to TNA after the match.

Nic Nemeth took to his Instagram following the loss and delivered a message to his fans. He apologized that he couldn't get the job done at Rebellion and thanked the fans for their support:

"Thanks for all the support, @TNAWrestling & "wanted man" fans! Sorry I couldn't come through for all of you," he wrote.

Dolph Ziggler (Nic Nemeth) opens up about WWE departure

Nic Nemeth discussed his time in WWE coming to an end last year and noted that it was time for him to leave.

Speaking with Sportskeeda Wrestling's Riju Dasgupta in an exclusive interview earlier this year, Nemeth was asked if he was disappointed about his time in the company coming to an end. Nemeth noted that he wasn't because he was spending a lot of time on the bench and younger fans expected him to lose whenever he appeared on WWE television.

"No because the last couple of years I've been kind of (saying), 'Hey, I'm going to get out of here, take a break, leave'. I go, 'I'm sitting on the bench a lot.' And that's okay, sometimes that's your place and I was constantly a 'break glass in case of main-eventer emergency,' and I appreciate that to a point, but even then at that point I had to go, listen, it's one thing to where people think I might not win but we'll see, but when eight-year-old kids are going, 'Youre gonna lose, we know,' I can only do so much," he said.
