WWE News: Kurt Angle explains why he wanted to return to the WWE

Kurt Angle on his way to the ring

What’s the story?

Amidst the pandemonium that is the WrestleMania weekend, Kurt Angle sat down with WWE.com to talk about why he came back to World Wrestling Entertainment.

In case you didn’t know...

When Angle left the WWE in the mid-2000’s, he took part in the surge of another wrestling promotion, TNA Impact Wrestling. Alongside Christian, he was the biggest WWE star to jump ship to the rival brand.

Even though men like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels and Sting were good draws, adding a legend like Angle only helped TNA take down their competition.

Even though they eventually failed, the Olympic Gold medalist put that brand on the map and gave fans a WWE alternative to watch every week. Time did move on and Angle was dealing with multiple health problems, including an addiction to painkillers after he broke his neck.

Vince McMahon presumably didn’t want Angle back in the company because of that crutch. Fast-forward several years, Angle is clean and back to the company that made him famous.

The heart of the matter

To the WWE fans, it’s surreal to see Angle back in the company. Many didn’t think it would happen again. Here were Angle’s thoughts on why he chose to come back:

"It wasn't really for me, it was for the fans. It was to be there, present, and for them to see you and say 'thank you Kurt' one more time, and for me to say back to them, 'no thank you.

It's also the fact that my three little kids have never seen me in the WWE before.

For them to at least witness, even though I have a five-month old, for her to be there present at the hall of fame and to know that her dad was inducted to the Hall of Fame when she was there. That means the world to me.”

Here’s the video of Angle making the above statement:

What’s next?

Kurt Angle will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, class of 2017 on the 31st of April. He might be a shoe-in to become the next general manager of Raw, if rumours are to be believed.

Author’s take

Angle belongs in a WWE ring. That’s where he got his professional wrestling start. That’s also where his career took him after the amateur wrestling scene.

He was one of the first wrestlers to become a sports entertainer. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native will be enshrined into the WWE Hall of Fame on March 31. It’s true. It’s damn true.
