WWE News: Alberto Del Rio released by WWE

Mexico’s Greatest Import will not be seen in the WWE ring again

After months of speculation regarding the future of WWE Superstar Alberto Del Rio, it has now been confirmed by the WWE that ‘Mexico’s Greatest Export’ has been released by the company after the two parties agreed on terms for his release.

Here is the official statement which appeared on WWE’s official website:

“WWE and Jose Rodriguez (Alberto Del Rio) have mutually agreed upon the terms of his release as of today, September 9, 2016.”

After a successful first stint with the company which lasted over 6 years, Del Rio returned to the company for the second time in October 2015, when he made a surprise return at Hell in a Cell and beat John Cena for the WWE United States Championship. He was accompanied by Zeb Colter, who was his manager in the initial days.

Huge things were expected from the Mexican, considering that he was a two-time World Heavyweight Champion before he left the company in 2014, to wrestle for other promotions.

After a strong start in his second-coming, it all went downhill for Del Rio after he and WWE Diva Paige went public with their relationship earlier this year. Backstage rumours about the situation indicate that the WWE hierarchy wanted Paige and Del Rio to split as they didn’t want the Mexican to have a negative influence on Paige.

However, when the couple didn’t adhere to it, they were drafted in separate brands at the brand-split with Del Rio being drafted to SmackDown while Paige to Raw.

Del Rio was suspended for a Wellness Policy violation on 18th August for 30 days, while Paige also received a similar punishment for Wellness Policy infringement the very next day.

The Mexican’s last WWE appearance came at SmackDown on 16th August, when he beat John Cena. Del Rio bids adieu to the WWE ring without making one final appearance and it remains to be seen if the same fate is suffered by his real-life girlfriend Paige, who is also at loggerheads with the company.

Del Rio tweeted following the announcement and has thanked the company for the opportunity provided to him:

It has been reported that Del Rio is open to joining Lucha Underground, if the promotion is able to compensate for his services.

Where do you think Alberto Del Rio will land up next? Will it be at Lucha Underground or any other promotion? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
