Having made an emphatic return to competition earlier this year at ONE Fight Night 10, Sage Northcutt remains one to watch in the lightweight division.

For the time being, the division is currently in a difficult position due to the absence of world champion, Christian Lee.

Lee, who is also the welterweight world champion, has been inactive throughout 2023 following the tragic passing of his younger sister, Victoria.

In an interview with The MMA Superfan, Sage Northcutt spoke about Lee’s potential comeback and how he takes inspiration from the toughness and resilience of his family:

“I can't even put myself in his position, you know. I mean like you said me coming back from an injury, that's totally different. I can't imagine his feelings right now, his whole family, or what they're going through with his sister and, you know he, Christian Lee, is an amazing, amazing champion, and what he's done and how he's performed and just his whole entire career.

Northcutt continued, comparing his own experiences to what the Lee family has gone through:

“So I think him coming back is something, if he decides to come back soon, that's going to be awesome. I really hope you stay strong because I can't imagine having something like that happen to my family.”

Sage Northcutt made his own return from the brink of retirement earlier this year

While Sage Northcutt can’t compare his own experiences to what the Lee family has been through, he can relate to the feeling of having no light at the end of the tunnel.

During his four-year absence from the Circle, it looked like ‘Super’ Sage might never return, but he remained patient and positive throughout the process. Coming back at ONE Fight Night 10, he marked his return by displaying his continued evolution as a mixed martial artist.

Submitting Ahmed Mujtaba via heel hook in the first minute, the stage is set for an even bigger 2024 for Northcutt in ONE Championship.
