ICY GRL fame Saweetie recently appeared on the Brown Bags Mornings podcast on Power 106, where she talked about her new song, NANi, and her struggles prior to becoming famous. Talking about the time she was homeless in L.A., Saweetie mentioned that she used her car as accommodation and became overwhelmed when she recalled the same.

The American rapper stated with teary eyes:

“I remember I was too proud to tell my friends and my family that I had nowhere to stay and I was literally couch surfing.”

She told the podcast that it was “cool” and that she didn’t have to worry about having a place to live. Additionally, Saweetie mentioned that her close friends were aware of her living situation, but she refused to “take up space” in someone’s house and decided to keep her closet in her car.

Saweetie lived with limited resources for a year: Details about the singer’s struggle and more

From being homeless and living in her car, Saweetie has come a long way with her music today. As per CAKnowledge, her net worth is estimated at $5 million in 2024. Commenting on how she eventually saved enough money to rent a room, Saweetie told the podcast it was about the same time she began writing ICY GRL.

The rapper also shared about how being homeless affected her self-esteem, having no confidence, and feeling bad about partying. Stating that she would “always just go home early” because she felt undeserving to be at parties, the My Type singer mentioned:

“I know I just made that comment, but it’s just like— imagine not having the money, couch surfing, and then sometimes being in the club or being at parties.”

She told the hosts of the podcast - Letty Peniche and Rosecrans Vic - that she could get a job, as most graduates are looking for the same. However, she realized that if she was working full-time for 40 hours a week, it would be equivalent to the hours spent in school. Hence, she realized she couldn’t pursue music if she decided to work, and that is when the Closer rapper decided to give herself a deadline to achieve her dreams.

In the Brown Bags Mornings podcast, the American rapper mentioned that she gave herself a year “to make it” and decided to return home if she couldn’t. Luckily, Saweetie was discovered and signed a contract because she needed the money.

Apart from her financial struggles, Saweetie has also been vocal about her mental health struggles. In an interview with PEOPLE in December 2021, the American rapper said that she required balance in her life. The Tap In rapper told PEOPLE:

“I feel like I’m being run down to the ground right now, and my body doesn’t feel good. I’ve had mental breakdowns, and it’s just really stressful, but it’s nice to be acknowledged because it lets me know that my hard work isn’t going unnoticed.”

In other news, the American rapper’s newly released song Richtivities received criticism from fans. The criticism states that the song propagates luxury amid a time when many Americans are unable to pay for basic necessities.

However, the American rapper replied to the backlash by mentioning that it was listening to music that made her hustle harder and achieve the lifestyle she always wanted.
