Following the major season finale, fans have been wondering exactly when X-Men '97 season 2 will come out, and it looks like the show's producer and Marvel's head of animation, Brad Winderbaum has good news for them. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that season 2 is in the editing stage right now.

Alongside confirming that X-Men '97 season 2 is being edited at the moment, Brad Winderbaum also confirmed that season 3 of the series is very much in the early stages of development.

"It feels like a lot of pressure on all of us at the studio as we're cutting season 2, as we're figuring out our plans in the future," says Winderbaum via Entertainment Weekly.

He continued:

""It is exciting and has taught us a lot of great lessons for the franchise."

Winderbaum also revealed that for X-Men '97 season 3, a new writer will be stepping in to take over the duties of Beau DeMayo.

Why won't Beau DeMayo return for X-Men '97 season 3?

A week before X-Men '97's release, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the show's writer and creator Beau DeMayo was fired from Marvel Studios. A reason for his firing wasn't given, but it was revealed that DeMayo had written all the scripts for X-Men '97 season 2 and was discussing early ideas for season 3 as well with his team.

Following his firing, Beau DeMayo went off to clear all his social media and lost his company e-mail as well, but since then he has gotten back online. He also continues to interact with fans and those involved with the show and was also breaking down parts of the episodes when they were released weekly.

Aside from working on X-Men '97, DeMayo was also a writer on Marvel's Moon Knight show and had also written early drafts for Mahershala Ali's Blade movie. Currently, it's unclear who will be taking over the writing duties from DeMayo for season 3, but Winderbaum assured that they will be "honoring" DeMayo's ideas for X-Men '97 season 2.

What will X-Men '97 season 2 be about?

The finale for season 1 set up X-Men '97 season 2 in a huge way. It saw all of the X-Men be sent through various periods of time following the explosion of Asteroid M. Charles Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler end up in 3000 BC, where they end up meeting a young Apocalypse, while Scott Summers and Jean Grey are sent into the future, where they meet a young Nathan Summers.

However, in the present, we see Apocalypse visit Genosha and mourn the losses of mutant lives that took place there. The season then ended with him holding up a playing card teasing Gambit's return as one of his Horsemen. It pretty much looks like X-Men '97 season 2 is going to focus on the X-Men trying to get back to the present while the threat of Apocalypse looms over them.

"It was always part of Beau's pitch to bring Apocalypse in at a certain point," revealed Winderbaum.

He continued:

"But season 1 was always going to be Magneto and Sinister with Bastion being the surprise villain in the second half. Apocalypse was never really on the table for season 1, but he was always top of mind as we thought about the future."

Currently, X-Men '97 season 2 doesn't have a release date.
