Is Satou Sabally playing tonight against Sky? Exploring the Wings star’s status on Saturday (May 18)

WNBA: Playoffs-Las Vegas Aces at Dallas Wings
Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally is still recovering from a shoulder injury.

Dallas Wings star Satou Sabally hasn't played basketball since injuring her shoulder in February during an Olympic qualifying tournament. She was competing together with her German teammates for a chance to go to the 2024 event in Paris. According to Wings CEO Greg Bibb, she had successful surgery and is doing rehab.

The Wings were excited about Sabally’s future with them before the injury struck. She earned her second All-Star nod and won the WNBA Most Improved Player Award. Dallas went out to get Emma Cannon to help the team cope with the injury to one of its best two-way players.

In the Dallas Wings’ 87-79 win over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday, the Wings needed an explosion from Arike Ogunbowale to hold off their opponents. Natasha Howard’s timely shots also helped the team survive. Sabally would have made a difference.

When will Satou Sabally return?

The Dallas Wings expect Satou Sabally to compete with Germany in the 2024 Paris Olympics before returning to play in the WNBA.

The league will take a break from July 21-August 24 for the summer games. When the rest of the stars come back for their national team duties, Sabally will be available for Dallas.

Based on that schedule, Sabally could be in Wings uniform on Aug. 16 when her team hosts the Connecticut Sun at College Park Center. Unless she suffers a setback during her rehab or acquires another injury in Paris, she should be ready by then.

Satou Sabally stats vs Chicago Sky

The Dallas Wings went 2-2 against the Chicago Sky last season. Sabally averaged 18.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists against the Eastern Conference team. One could make an argument that she was the best player in that series, considering her impact on both ends of the floor.

Sabally’s injury robbed fans of what might have been a mouthwatering matchup against highly touted rookie Angel Reese. The self-named “Chi Barbie” struggled in the first half of the first meeting between the two teams but played better as the game progressed.

A Sabally-Reese mano-a-mano duel would have been a big sub-headline to open the Wings’ season in front of their fans.
