Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt has agreed a one year contract extension that will keep him at the Anfield until 2013. Kuyt was linked with a move to Inter Milan earlier this season when Rafael Benitez was in charge at Inter, but the winger decided to commit his future to the Merseyside club.
Kuyt, who joined Liverpool from Dutch football club Feyenoord in a £9m move, expressed his delight after signing the extension. He said,
“I am very happy. We have been working on something, but always with the intention to reaching an agreement. The club had this approach too, so I must say that all conversations were conducted in a friendly atmosphere. It fits perfectly with the feeling here at the club. From the very first day I walked in, I felt welcome. That feeling has never left.”
Kuyt, who was an integral part of the Dutch side that reached the World Cup finals last year, has already scored 11 goals for Liverpool in this season, including a hat-trick against Manchester United in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over their rivals. Known for his work ethic, Kuyt can be seen running up and down the pitch, attacking and defending with equal prowess.
The exuberant manager Kenny Dalglish added, “He never gives up, fights with everything and he is simply a good footballer. He scores goals and it’s as simple as that, and often in major competitions or at crucial moments, like the recent Manchester United game. Dirk is happy with the extension, and I am sure we will enjoy having him.”
Liverpool have seen their fortunes overturn since Dalglish’s arrival. The team which was near the relegation zone at Christmas now sits pretty at 6th place in the table, 5 points behind 5th place Tottenham. With the arrival of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, Kuyt’s role in the team has shifted to the right side of midfield. And judging by his recent performances looks like he is relishing his role in the team.
Kuyt becomes the second player to extend his contract with Liverpool after the Brazilian Lucas signed a new deal with the club earlier this season.
