In the build up to the 25th Royal Rumble match, scheduled to be held on January 29th, 2012, we have revisited the first five Royal Rumble matches so far. The sixth Royal Rumble match took place on January 24, 1993 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. Here are some important facts about this match:
- Bob Backlund broke the One hour barrier to set a new record for longevity in a Royal Rumble match. He lasted for a total of 1 hour 1 minute and 10 seconds in this match!
- Yokozuna became the fourth ever Royal Rumble match winner in history. He entered the match at number 27 which has produced the most number of Royal Rumble winners till date (4).
- Yokozuna also eliminated the most number of participants in this match (7).
- It was from this match that the tradition of granting the Royal Rumble winner a main event title match at the subsequent Wrestlemania event came into existence. Yokozuna got his chance at the WWF Championship against Bret Hart in Wrestlemania 9 and was successful in winning it.
- This match is also remembered for the WWF debut of Giant Gonzalez but he wasn’t a participant in the match.
- The Undertaker was Gonzalez’s bunny as the ‘Dead Man’ became the first man to be eliminated from a Royal Rumble match by a non-participant.
