Newcastle seem poised to make their second signing of the January transfer window as they look set to bring in French international defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from French club Montpellier, as reported earlier.
The versatile defender who can also play in a holding midfield role had earned rave reviews last season as he captained Montpellier to their maiden Ligue 1 title and has been on Newcastle’s radar ever since. The Magpies had tried to bring him to Tyneside in the summer, however problems arose with his agent which put off the transfer. He was heavily linked with Arsenal as well in recent times but it seems the North-East club have pipped the Gunners to his signature.
Montpellier have confirmed on their official website that they, as well as the player, have come to an agreement regarding fees and wages. Yanga-Mbiwa is due to fly in to Newcastle today to complete his move following a medical scheduled later today. Alan Pardew will be hoping that he will shore up a Newcastle defence that has conceded 41 goals in 23 games.
