Manchester United executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward has confirmed that the Red Devils will once again be active in the transfer market this summer, claiming that a minimum of three big-name players will be signed to bolster their struggling squad.
United have struggled to match their achievements of last season, with David Moyes taking Sir Alex Ferguson’s title winning side down to seventh in the table, out of the title race and in serious doubt of even qualifying for the Champions League.
They have made big-money signings in both transfer windows under the stewardship of Moyes, with Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata joining the club, but with a mass clear-out expected over the summer at Old Trafford, there is expected to be plenty of business happening at United.
Woodward himself expects things to be busy as this year has not been acceptable in the eyes of the board, but they will back Moyes to bring in the players to turn their fortunes around.
Woodward, who bore some criticism for the failed summer recruitment drive, said, “It’s fair to say we are focused on strengthening the squad and we are looking at some players in the squad who we would perhaps look to sell in the summer.
“We wouldn’t necessarily look to churn a significant number of players, because that can have a destabilising effect.
“Historically we have done three sales and three purchases each year and it’s possible we would do more than that this summer.”
