On the latest edition of AEW Dynamite, Toni Storm returned to the promotion for the first time since All In in August, confronting Mariah May. This happened after The Glamour defended her title against Mina Shirakawa.
The two former best friends went to war tonight in what was their second time facing off in a singles match in their careers. They faced off in August 2023 at Stardom's 5 Star Grand Prix tournament, and Mariah won that day. Her win tonight makes her a perfect 2-0 against Shirakawa.
To everyone's surprise, Toni Storm arrived, reverting to her original gimmick. This was a sign that her 'Timeless' persona had now retired, and she would be going back to her roots and rekindling her feud with Mariah May. The Worlds End pay-per-view is set to take place on December 28, but below are some reasons why this grudge match should not take place then.
Top WWE star blasted, compared to Winnie the Pooh RIGHT HERE
#1. Premature buildup
The first edition of Toni Storm and Mariah May featured a slow-burn buildup, which saw Mariah turn on her mentor. She played the fool and was able to bait out Toni. Her turn was something fans did not expect, as they believed the opposite was bound to happen.
Seeing as this was one of the more emotional feuds this year, culminating in a show-stealing match at All In, it wouldn't make sense to push through with only a two-week buildup.
Storm's appearance tonight may be the beginning of the mind games between the two rivals, which would be something the promotion can work on before giving them their platform to shine at a further pay-per-view.
#2. Thunder Rosa problem
Before Toni Storm's arrival, Thunder Rosa had already identified herself as the next contender for the Women's World Championship. She claimed that Mariah May wasn't her champion and would do everything in her power to dethrone her should Mina Shirakawa not get the job done. With The Glamour defending, she looked to be next in line until Storm made her return.
La Mera Mera was at the ringside tonight, and she was shocked by Toni's return. It remains to be seen how this will be settled, but with her calling first dibs, she could be the one to face Mariah May at Worlds End. Should the British star defend, she would have no one else lining up to her but Toni Storm, thus setting up their future bout.
#3. Toni Storm vs. Mariah May should be saved for Grand Slam: Australia
The first bout between the two rivals was at AEW All In, in front of Mariah May's home crowd in the United Kingdom. However, being the heel in this feud, the crowd naturally cheered more for Toni Storm.
In February, AEW will be holding its first pay-per-view in Australia. This will be close to home for Toni, who, although born in New Zealand, moved to Australia at a young age. This could be her chance this time around to compete in front of her home country.
This would also be the perfect moment for her to dethrone Mariah May, should this be the direction that the promotion is heading toward.
#4. Mariah May's title reign would end too soon
Mariah May's reign is 109 days after she captured the Women's World Championship in August at All In. She has competed in five title matches and defended her title against Anna Jay, Willow Nightingale, and Mina Shirakawa earlier tonight.
Her title has had mixed reviews, as she has only faced a handful of high-profile talent on the roster. But in all her matches, she has proven why she's one of the best women's wrestlers in the world.
Having her drop the title to Toni Storm as soon as Worlds End instantly will make her reign lose less value, as not only would this be without a proper buildup, but this would be such an instant title swap back to Toni Storm.
Should the plan be for Mariah to drop the title by Grand: Slam Australia in February, this would continue May's run for another two months and build up the perfect ending for her title reign.
It remains to be seen how things will go in the coming weeks, but this feud between these top stars has now been rekindled and will be something fans should stay tuned for.
