On the latest episode of AEW Collision, Buddy Matthews suffered an unfortunate injury during the trios match between The House of Black and The Bang Bang Gang. The incident occurred when Matthews performed a top rope Meteora on Juice Robinson, only to land awkwardly on his left knee.
The former World Trios Champion was soon escorted backstage, where he was laid out by Christian Cage's Patriarchy. The former TNT Champion took out Buddy Matthews with a Con-Chair-To, seemingly writing him off television.
Despite Matthews' injury, The House of Black somehow managed to prevail over The Bang Bang Gang to secure a future shot at the AEW World Trios Championship.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
With Buddy Matthews seemingly set to be away from in-ring action, the group will need a new member to fill in his spot. In this article, let's look at five superstars who could replace Buddy Matthews in House of Black.
#5 Pac leaves The Death Triangle for The House of Black
With Buddy Matthews out with an injury, it was Pac who emerged to help The House of Black take down Juice Robinson and The Gunns. Despite his previous issues with Malakai Black, the English Star could join forces with the mysterious faction to compete for the World Trios Championship.
The ongoing feud between Pac's Death Triangle faction and Bullet Club Gold has been completely one-sided, with Jay White and Co. holding an edge over their opponents.
With Rey Fenix and Pentagon Jr. falling short of his expectations, Pac could switch over to The House of Black to settle his score with Bullet Club Gold. Having a similar hard-hitting combat style as Matthews, the former AEW All-Atlantic Champion could prove to be a valuable addition to Malakai Black's faction.
#4 Mark Briscoe could temporarily fill in for Buddy Matthews
The recent Collision episode seemingly established The House of Black as a babyface faction. The group now seems to be embroiled in a feud with Christian Cage's Patriarchy, with both Malakai Black and Brody King looking to avenge Buddy Matthews.
At the moment, The House of Black finds itself outnumbered in comparison to Christian Cage's faction. However, a former rival could help even the odds for Malakai Black and Co. in their war against The Patriarchy.
The star in question is the reigning ROH World Champion Mark Briscoe, who has a storied history with The House of Black. In March 2024, Briscoe teamed up with Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal to face the spooky trio in an Atlanta Street Fight, where Malakai Black put him through a flaming table.
In pro wrestling, the most bitter enemies eventually end up developing respect for each other. Interestingly, Buddy Matthews and Malakai Black were eternal rivals in WWE before eventually joining forces in AEW.
With The House of Black stepping up against Christian Cage's evil ways, Mark Briscoe might be compelled to join them in this battle.
#3 Danhausen embraces a more serious character to join Malakai Black
Danhausen has felt like an afterthought on AEW television so far. The mysterious star has been majorly presented as a comedic act, which has restricted his character to a certain extent.
With AEW focusing on a more wrestling-centric product, Danhausen may consider cutting down on certain aspects of his persona. Having been absent from the company for a long time, The Very Nice Very Evil star could look to adopt a more serious gimmick upon his return.
Allying himself with The House of Black could allow the face-painted star to rise through the ranks of a bloated AEW roster. It would be Danhausen's first major program in the promotion since his debut in 2022.
Considering the supernatural elements associated with his character, the popular star could thrive with Malakai Black as his master. Joining The House of Black would be the best way to utilize Danhausen's untapped potential, who has yet to have a breakout performance in All Elite Wrestling.
#2 Killswitch betrays Christian Cage to join The House of Black
After a three-year-long alliance, Christian Cage and Killswitch (fka Luchasauras) seem to be heading towards a breakup. Blinded by his love for Nick Wayne, Captain Charisma has been ignorant of Killswitch's efforts for The Patriarchy.
The former Jurassic Express member almost walked out on Cage during the "Father's Day" segment on Collision before being recalled into the ring by the former TNT Champion.
If Cage continues to berate Killswitch in the coming weeks, the former Luchasauras could ditch his "father" to join The House of Black. It would be a huge blow for The Patriarchy to lose the masked star, who has sacrificed himself for the faction several times in the past.
As for the House of Black, the 39-year-old giant could be a suitable replacement for Buddy Matthews. Killswitch would bring a significant increase in the group's muscle power, possibly helping them reclaim the AEW World Trios Championship.
#1 Ricochet debuts in AEW to help out his old friend
Per recent reports, Ricochet is expected to leave WWE in July. Many fans hope that The One and Only signs with All Elite Wrestling, where he could thrive as a singles competitor.
If Ricochet were to join AEW soon, he would be the perfect choice to replace Buddy Matthews in the House of Black.
The Future of Flight has a long history with Malakai Black. The two stars teamed up frequently during their time in NXT, where they even won the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
The duo also debuted on WWE's main roster together in 2019. Black and Ricochet performed as a tag team at WrestleMania 35 before eventually going their separate ways.
With Christian Cage looking to destroy Black's faction, The Highlight of the Night could come to the aid of his former friend. A high-flyer like Ricochet will bring a new dynamic to the House of Black, which only comprises strikers and brawlers at the moment.
