The two wrestlers first squared off four consecutive times at WWE live shows in May 2013. All four matches ended with R-Truth's defeat. However, they went head-to-head again later that month on Monday Night RAW for the United States Championship, which Moxley held. Again, R-Truth suffered a loss.

Throughout the rest of 2013, Moxley and Truth went one-on-one several times on live shows, with the former WWE Champion always coming on top.
In 2015, Moxley and R-Truth faced Bad News Barrett in two consecutive Triple-Threat matches at live shows on the road to WrestleMania. Barrett won both matches. Moxley also scored another pinfall victory over R-Truth during a Gauntlet match on SmackDown in March 2015.
Following that match, The 52-time 24/7 Champion and the former WWE Champion faced each other in a ladder match, Royal Rumble match, and two Battle Royals. None of these matches could have been won by pinfalls. That left R-Truth with no pinfall victories ever over Jon Moxley.
