The NJPW Resurgence main event featured AEW's Lance Archer against Hiroshi Tanahashi

A rematch from G1 Climax 2019 saw AEW's Murderhawk Monster Lance Archer defend his IWGP US Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi as former AEW world champion Jon Moxley watched at ringside.

Archer recently won the belt at AEW Fyter Fest when he defeated long-time foe Jon Moxley in his homestate of Texas. It was Archer's first signature win in AEW.

Archer dominated the early proceedings as Tanahashi looked to counter the big man's offense. Tanahashi reversed a scoop slam attempt and attacked Archer's legs.

Archer went for an early chokeslam but Tanahashi powered out before kicking Archer's left hamstring and locking in a submission hold. Archer reversed with a vice grip on Tanahashi's head.

Tanahashi rolled to the outside and Archer dropped him with a rolling senton from the apron. He launched Tanahashi into the barricade. Archer rolled Tanahashi back into the ring and clobbered him in the ring corner with strikes to the head and mid-section.

Archer was utterly dominant as he totally no-sold all of Tanahashi's strikes but Tanahashi countered another chokeslam attempt and attacked Archer's knee to take him down. Tanahashi got a two-count with a 450 splash from the top rope.

Archer planted Tanahashi with a chokeslam on the apron and hit him with the moonsault off the ring ropes. Archer got in the Blackout but Tanahashi got his foot to the bottom rope.

Tanahashi mounted a comeback with a swinging neckbreaker and a slingblade for a nearfall. Tanahashi rammed Archer into a steel chair perched in the ring corner. Tanahashi dropped Archer with a crossbody, followed it up with two body splashes and won the IWGP US Championship for the first time in his career.

After the match, Archer challenged Tanahashi to fight him in AEW.
