2024 has been a bittersweet year for AEW. It has seen debuts, titles changing hands, spectacular matches, and amazing moments. Unfortunately, it has also had its fair share of controversies.
Let us dive into 5 of the biggest AEW controversies of the past year.
#5. Britt Baker's backstage issues with former AEW World Champion MJF
Earlier this year, reports of a backstage conflict emerged between Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. and Maxwell Jacob Friedman. At Dynamite 250, the latter became the new International Champion by defeating Will Osperay in an hour-long showdown. However, Britt Baker was not a fan of this booking. She was reportedly unhappy that The Salt of the Earth took up too much TV time.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
Baker's comments reached MJF, who was infuriated. He confronted the former Women's champion in the female locker room. The situation apparently got very heated and D.M.D. was furious that MJF's girlfriend Alica Atout shared locker-room conversations with her boyfriend. HR had to get involved and Baker got suspended.
#4. Ricochet retweeted Andrew Tate
AEW star Ricochet recently turned heel. His new gimmick has received a lukewarm reception. However, fans are eager to see his progress in the Jacksonville-based company in 2025. He recently stirred controversy by retweeting a post by the infamous social media personality, Andrew Tate.
Many fans were furious with The Highlight Reel's social media activity and criticized him. It remains to be seen if the 36-year-old bounces back from this setback.
#3. Ryan Nemeth's complaints of harassment went unanswered
A few weeks back, news emerged that back in September 2023, former All Elite star Ryan Nemeth had filed a formal complaint to AEW executives, alleging abuse, harassment, and threats from CM Punk. However, the company seemingly did not take any action.
This report stirred huge controversy and fans across the globe criticized the company for this. Tony Khan or anyone else from All Elite Wrestling management hasn't publicly commented on the matter yet.
#2. Rey Fenix's ugly situation with the company
Over the past few months, Rey Fenix's relationship with All Elite Wrestling has taken a blow. He was reportedly going to leave the company along with his brother, Penta, this year. However, Tony Khan added injury time to his contract.
Recently, he angrily tweeted about his experience in AEW. In this now-deleted tweet, he claimed that the company ignored him for months when he needed medical help. According to Dave Meltzer, the former International Champion is trying to get fired.
"I think right now, Fenix is looking at being fired. I've had discussions with WWE talent in this situation who came up with some wild ideas to get fired so they could go elsewhere but I can also say and there is precedent that it doesn't work and they don't get fired," said Meltzer. #1. AEW aired CM Punk's All In footage
At All In 2023, CM Punk and Jack Perry had a physical altercation backstage. This led to The Best in the World getting fired. Eventually, the 46-year-old rejoined WWE.
Earlier this year, the company aired the footage of this confrontation on Dynamite. This caused an uproar among fans. Tony Khan was called desperate and unprofessional for this decision. Additionally, the company received a lot of negative publicity.
