A former AEW star recently discussed his release from the Jacksonville-based promotion and recalled getting a call from Tony Schiavone, who informed him about his release. The star being discussed is Slim J.
The 39-year-old star debuted in All Elite Wrestling in July 2022. Before joining AEW, he made a name for himself at the independent promotions. Slim J then aligned with Ari Daivari and Parker Boudreaux, known as Trustbusters, during his stint for the majority of his run. The trio was mostly featured on Dark episode during 2022. Later, in 2023 and 2024, he wrestled in ROH. The star was released in April 2024 as a part of budget cuts.
During an interview with Talking Indys, Slim J spoke about not getting demotivated after being released from the Jacksonville-based promotion. He also claimed that Tony Schiavone informed him about his release.
"There are so many people that have not made it, or even got the opportunity to make it for a shot in front of these same people that I’ve got numerous opportunities, and I finally got the contracts. Did I get used well? Did I get used to my potential? No, but that’s the name of the game. Am I disappointed in that? Yeah. But is that gonna break me down and break me? Hell no. I’ve got so many sh*t sandwich stories that I could tell you where I just choked them down, just kept going through, that are way darker than getting a phone call from Tony Schiavone telling me that they’re letting me go." Vince Russo thinks Tony Schiavone is loyal to Tony Khan
Schiavone has been with AEW since 2019 and has experience working with WCW, WWE, and other promotions.
While speaking on The Wrestling Outlaws, former WWE head writer Vince Russo said Tony has been loyal to the AEW President and advises him.
"I really think Tony Schiavone has tried to be that guy. That seems to everybody that that would be a JR [Jim Ross] role but JR is the type of guy that if you're not gonna listen to him, he's not gonna bother. He's only gonna tell you for so long. But I kinda get the feeling that Schiavone is that guy that is constantly trying to smarten him up. I think Tony [Schiavone] is very loyal to him."
It will be interesting to see what is next for Slim J, as he was released four months ago.
