Matt Cardona has made one of the biggest comebacks since leaving WWE. He was released from the global sports entertainment juggernaut in 2020. Since then, he has wrestled in many independent promotions and made a huge name for himself.

The Deathmatch King has also sporadically performed in the Jacksonville-based promotion. He recently appeared in Tony Khan's second promotion, ROH, to set up a feud with Chris Jericho. The duo will face off for the ROH World Championship at the Final Battle pay-per-view on December 20, 2024. The match has been highly hyped on their recent shows.

A recent report suggested that Matt Cardona may be in talks to sign with AEW. While the speculation has yet to be confirmed, he would be a massive acquisition for Tony Khan and the roster. Many have praised his work on the independent circuit, which could draw many eyes to the company.

Let's take a look at some of the AEW names who could be suitable opponents for him if he decides to sign the dotted line.

#5. Rematch with Chris Jericho

The feud between Chris Jericho and Matt Cardona is already heating up, with the latter having the upper hand. The Learning Tree won the ROH World Championship almost two months ago. He defeated Mark Briscoe in a ladder match on the Dynamite edition of October. He defended his title against Tomohiro Ishii and has mostly featured on ROH since then.

It seems unlikely that Chris Jericho will lose the title this soon. If Matt Cardona steals the show at Final Battle, AEW could offer him a contract, and then later, he could capture the ROH title from Jericho in a rematch.

#4. Mark Briscoe

Mark Briscoe has established himself as a credible star in the Jacksonville-based promotion. His promos are considered one of the highly entertaining segments of any show. He also proved himself as a versatile star who could hang with any star.

Like Matt Cardona, the former ROH World Champion is known for deathmatches. Both stars could put on a magnificent and violent affair.

#3. Matt Cardona could instantly take down Death Riders

Jon Moxley and his crew attacked Top Flight and many other tag teams because the Puryevor of Violence thought they were incompetent. After multiple conflicts, cracks were seen between the Top Flight. Action Andretti and Lio Rush showed villainous attitudes, while Dante Martin and Darius Martin didn't like to follow in their footsteps.

With Lio and Action showing signs of readiness to conquer the mighty, Matt Cardona should align with the young rising stars and declare war against the Death Riders. The trio could even go on to challenge the AEW World Trios Champions.

#2. The Aerial Assassin vs The Complete

Will Ospreay has been one of the top stars in the company and has wrestled top-notch matches in the promotion since March 2024. To establish Matt Cardona as a credible wrestler, he must prove his aptness against the very best of AEW.

The Complete star could easily be elevated in the contest, as he will not hesitate to showcase his exceptional qualities against Will Ospreay.

#1. Adam Copeland

The Rated R-Superstar faced Matt earlier in the year before losing the TNT Championship. Copeland had announced the Cope Open challenge in March, which was answered by the Deathmatch King. In an amazing match, the champion retained the title. After the contest, Matt Cardona teased a rematch between them.

Unfortunately in May, Adam Copeland injured his leg and has been absent since then. He is reportedly returning in January 2025 and has been medically cleared to compete. Their rematch could be a huge talking point for the promotion, with Cardona picking victory this time.

It will be interesting to see who else will step up against the star known for always being ready.
