A popular AEW star surprisingly defeated former IWGP Women's Champion Mercedes Moné at NJPW Resurgence. The star is none other than Willow Nightingale.
The 29-year-old star has been frequently featured on ROH's Honor Club TV. She has also wrestled in a few dark matches prior to AEW Dynamite. Her latest on-screen match for the Jacksonville-based promotion was against former WWE Divas Champion Saraya.
Tonight on NJPW Resurgence, a four-women tournament to crown the inaugural NJPW Strong Women's Champion took place. The four participants were Mercedes Moné, Momo Kohgo, Stephanie Vaquer, and Willow Nightingale.
Both Moné and Nightingale won their respective matches and wrestled each other in the tournament finals. It is to be noted that the CEO of NJPW captured the IWGP Women's Championship in her debut match.
Despite all her efforts, Moné was unable to pick up the win. Nightingale managed to stun the world by defeating the former WWE SmackDown Women's Champion to be crowned the inaugural Strong Women's Champion.
Prior to their match, Moné took some inspiration from CM Punk and claimed that she would make her opponent go to sleep.
Former WWE Superstar Mojo Rawley commented on Mercedes Moné's future plans amidst AEW move rumors
The CEO and Mojo Rawley are close friends. The two built a friendship during their time together in the Stamford-based promotion.
Rawley was recently interviewed by Inside The Ropes. During the interview, he mentioned that his friend is aiming to achieve a lot more in her career than she already has. He also mentioned that she also has a lot of scope as an actor as well.
"I think she wants to do a lot of things right now. I mean, her star power, I feel like is at an all time high right now even more so than when she was with WWE. I mean, with Mandalorian she just finished her second season with them. I mean, I know she has a lot of stuff cooking right now she's gotten a lot of requests for other movies, other television shows."
Mojo Rawley also recently traveled to Japan to show his support for Moné.
