AEW stars have just revealed that the promotion was set to have a crossover with the popular Korean Netflix show Squid Game during one of their shows. However, this had to be scrapped last minute due to certain technicalities.
The show has taken the world by storm, with its second season just recently being released on the streaming platform this week. The concept of the show revolves around a group of individuals who recruit the less fortunate into playing children's games for money. Little do they know that their lives are on the line.
While speaking on Tunnel Talk, The Young Bucks revealed that back in the episode of AEW Dynamite before Halloween 2021, The Elite was supposed to come out wearing Squid Game costumes. That night they faced off against Dark Order. Matt Jackson revealed that they had the costumes ready, and were even going to do a spot referencing an iconic moment in the show.
“This one must have been three years ago. It was the Halloween episode. We had all done our due diligence and we had these great costumes for Squid Game. We had the whole match planned around me, Nick, Kenny…. Who else teamed with us that night? It was the night we ended up being the Ghostbusters. That was a fun night but it was frustrating. Like Matt said, we were supposed to actually be Squid Game. We had all the costumes. We had worked so hard on it. We were so excited. We had a tug of war spot in the match, we were going to do all this crazy stuff."
They continued by mentioning how Tony Khan broke the news that WBD did not like the idea and wanted them to instead reference a property of the network itslef. So, this ended up being Ghostbusters instead and actually worked out better for them.
"I am not kidding you when I say this, we were three or four hours from [first] bell and Tony [Khan] came into our room so frustrated. He is like: ‘You guys aren’t going to believe this but the Network does not want you to be the Squid Game guys. They are p**sed about it. You have to do something that is part of the property of WBD.’ It was like [Ghostbusters] or Rick and Morty or a couple of others. Ghostbusters was the best option, obviously. It ended up working out even better, I would say. I am glad we ended up doing it the way that we did it." [H/T - WrestleTalk]
The Young Bucks recently revealed who they wanted to lose their AEW tag team titles to
During Fright Night Dynamite, The Young Bucks ended their six-month reign as the AEW World Tag Team Champions, dropping the titles to Private Party.
While on the same podcast ahead of Wrestle Dynasty this weekend, they revealed there were plans for another tag team to beat them for the title that was scrapped. This would be The Outrunners who have become arguably the most over duo currently in AEW.
They did not disclose why this ended up not pushing through, but in the end, Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen had the support of the crowd when they finally became champions, so it all worked out.
Now The Young Bucks will head to Wrestle Dynasty this weekend, as they will challenge for the IWGP Tag Team Titles, in hopes of bringing these back to AEW.
