Chris Jericho shocked the entire world when he defeated Mark Briscoe on AEW Dynamite to become the new Ring of Honor World Champion. No one had seen it coming.
The Learning Tree now has another star next to his name and one can say that is well deserved. Tony Khan would have thought it through before making him a world champion and we might now have some insight into why that decision was taken.
Renowned wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer has now given a plausible explanation as to why Chris Jericho has become the new Ring of Honor World Champion. Speaking on the Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said:
"I think that if they are working on an ROH television deal, then it probably is beneficial for them to be champion, to try and close that deal." [H/T Wrestling Inc]
After saying this he then confirmed that Tony Khan is hopeful and trying to get a new deal for Ring of Honor.
Chris Jericho reveals future plans
Chris Jericho is one of the most experienced stars on the AEW roster and he also recently became the ROH World Champion. It would be fair to say that he is very well-settled in the Jacksonville-based promotion.
He was recently asked if he had any plans of going back to WWE. In an interview with Comic Book, Jericho without giving much away said that he enjoyed working in the Stamford-based promotion and wouldn't mind reliving the experience. He also stated he loved being in AEW.
“I enjoyed working there in the past, and I can probably work there in the future as well. We’ll see. To me, business is business, but I enjoy working with AEW; I enjoy all that we’ve accomplished since day one, especially now with the new TV deal. We did what we set out to do, which was to change the course of wrestling history—Tony and I and all of us have done that,” he said.
It is interesting that he said he could probably work in WWE in the future. Only time will tell if it will come to pass or whether the veteran sticks to the Tony Khan-led promotion.
