CM Punk and AEW shocked the world of professional wrestling in the summer of 2021 with his highly-anticipated return to the sport. After a controversial run, the multi-time champion was let go by Tony Khan, which opened the door for his WWE comeback. Punk is just now revealing a major detail from his All Elite debut.
The Second City Saint turned WWE ice cream bars into the stuff of legend. Good Humor sold the items for almost thirty years until discontinuing them in 2008. Punk demanded their return in 2011, with his face front-and-center, but WWE never brought the treats back, despite several teases. When the ROH Hall of Famer shockingly debuted for AEW on August 20, 2021, during The First Dance, which was the second-ever Rampage episode, Punk gifted free ice cream bars to the sold-out crowd at the United Center in his hometown.
Punk partnered with Chicago's Pretty Cool Ice Cream for the ice cream bars, and it was noted back then how he paid for the cold snacks himself. In his new interview with No-Contest Wrestling, the 45-year-old revealed that he spent $40,000 of his own money on the ice cream bars given to fans at Rampage that night.
The revelation came when the host was asking about Punk's WWE return at the Survivor Series in Chicago last year, acknowledging how there were rumors and chatter on a potential appearance ahead of the show. He also commented on fan support and fans chanting his name during other matches:
"What helped all of that is, anytime they're in Chicago, [there are rumors on CM Punk appearing], and that is precisely why I spent $40,000 on ice cream bars when I came back in 2021, right? And because that was a legit thank-you... thank you for seven years of chanting my name, and... I do have a little bit of sympathy and empathy for the people that were always in the ring when that was going on, and I do think a lot of the sourness and maybe hard feelings some people have for me, is because of that," CM Punk said. Punk continued:
"When they're busting their a*s, [fans] are chanting for me... but I understand, I'll deal with it as it comes, but that's one of those... man, I wouldn't be anywhere, and I wouldn't be back here [WWE] if it weren't for a great many circumstances, but one of them is the fans, especially in Chicago, but worldwide, people bringing signs, and chanting my name. It's unbelievable. So, they got some ice cream that night," CM Punk said. [From 35:32 to 36:02]
Punk's AEW Rampage ice cream stunt went viral in a major way as some fans were selling their used wrappers for close to $100. The fan-favorite did a similar giveaway last weekend at the NXT CW premiere in Chicago, but this time fans received something other than ice cream.
CM Punk reunites with former AEW colleagues
CM Punk returned to WWE's Hell in a Cell structure this past weekend. The former AEW World Champion defeated Drew McIntyre inside the Cell at Saturday's Bad Blood PLE from Atlanta, GA.
Several wrestling legends attended Bad Blood. Diamond Dallas Page shared photos from backstage, including a photo of Punk with Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, who he worked with in AEW. DDP also had major praise for WWE officials.
Punk vs. McIntyre opened Bad Blood and went more than thirty minutes. The Straight Edge Superstar was accused of being reckless and dangerous during the violent match after McIntyre suffered an injury.
