AEW star Will Ospreay has just been given a high distinction following his recent matches that stole the show. He is the first wrestler to have ever been awarded five or more stars for two different matches on the same night.

At Worlds End last weekend, Ospreay competed twice in one night as part of the Continental Classic. He faced off against Kyle Fletcher in the tournament's semifinals, then took on Kazuchika Okada in the finals. Despite only winning the first match, both were rated as five-star bouts.

In the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave Will Ospreay's match with Fletcher five stars, while his match with Okada was rated 5.25 stars. This was the first time that Meltzer had ever given someone two five-star matches in one night. Next to these two in the ratings was Mercedes Moné vs. Kris Statlander, garnering 4.5 stars.

Dave Meltzer claims Will Ospreay had the best opening match of all time, beating a popular WWE grudge match

The veteran journalist also claimed recently that the Aerial Assasin's match against Fletcher was the best opening match on a pay-per-view in history. He claimed this could have won match of the year at any given time despite it being second-best to Ospreay's match with Okada later in the night.

Dave Meltzer also compared this match to CM Punk's Hell in a Cell match with Drew McIntyre at WWE Bad Blood. He felt that Punk vs. McIntyre was a higher-intensity contest in terms of their feud, and this provided them the edge, but in terms of wrestling, he felt that Ospreay vs. Fletcher surpassed it.

"Punk vs. McIntyre have the edge, in a sense, that it had a big feud climax, and was a very well-done Hell in a Cell, but as far as the match goes, Ospreay vs. Fletcher was a lot better."

Since Kyle Fletcher's heel turn, he has a 1-1 head-to-head record with Will Ospreay. AEW seems to be hinting at a tie-breaker, as earlier this week on Dynamite, the company highlighted this statistic during one of its video packages. Whoever comes out on top remains to be seen.
