A former WWE Superstar suffered a huge setback earlier this month when he failed to capture a World Championship. However, the talent being referred to, Matt Cardona, is seemingly moving on from the loss and is focused on an upcoming event.
The Indy God stunned fans early in December by appearing at Ring of Honor to challenge Chris Jericho to an ROH World Title match at ROH Final Battle 2024. The show emanated from the iconic Hammerstein Ballroom on December 20 and witnessed The Learning Tree retain his belt against Cardona, owing to interference from Jericho's associates, Big Bill and Bryan Keith.
The Deathmatch King is seemingly looking to recuperate from his loss at the hands of The Nueve. To that end, Matt Cardona recently took to X/Twitter to issue an open challenge for The People vs. GCW 2025, set to be organized by Game Changer Wrestling and to take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom on January 19.
"1/19/25 @GCWWrestling_ #ThePeopleVsGCW Hammerstein Ballroom I challenge anyone...ANYONE," wrote Cardona.

GCW is one of many independent promotions where Cardona has been competing since his release from WWE in 2020. He has also competed in The Wrestling Revolver, MLW, House of Glory, TNA, and AEW, among other places.
Matt Cardona faced another WWE legend this year
Matt Cardona returned to AEW for the first time since 2020 on the March 30 episode of Collision. The King of the Indies challenged his former mentor, WWE Hall of Famer Adam Copeland, for the TNT Championship, albeit in an unsuccessful effort.
Cardona was recently featured on Hey!(Ew), and during the interview, host RJ City jokingly asked the former Intercontinental Champion if he had agreed to stay away from the Tony Khan-led company for four years in exchange for a bout with Copeland as part of his previous "limited" contract.
Cardona replied by affirming that he would have taken such a deal had it been offered.
"No, but in retrospect, if they would have said that, 'Hey, go away, and we'll bring you back to wrestle Adam Copeland,' I would have done it because it was my dream match," said Cardona.
It remains to be seen what lies next for Matt Cardona in the pro wrestling industry.
