A former WWE star has come out and declared how AEW is a much needed opposition for the Stamford-based promotion. This will not come as a shock to many.
The star in question is none other than AEW’s newest signing, Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin signed up with the company earlier this month and has since aligned himself with long-term friend MVP as a part of the Hurt Syndicate.
He is well acquainted with the inner workings of WWE, and he has admitted that having AEW as competition is good for the wrestling landscape. Speaking on the Gabby AF podcast, he said:
"Obviously, like anything else, there are some things I go, ‘Hmmm, I don’t know about this.’ But at the same time, I’m too new to really pass judgment right now. Because I look at the overall effect that AEW has had on the wrestling landscape. And for the most, and to me, it’s been mostly positive. You need a strong company aside from WWE. And there are a lot of guys and girls on AEW who, quiet frankly, may not have ever gotten a shot to even be on national TV, much less a star. So I applaud [them], they are really giving a lot of well-deserving chance to shine. How bright? It’s really up to them. But it’s 100% a positive thing. We needed AEW as opposed to WWE." Shelton Benjamin reveals the differences he has seen in AEW from WWE
Shelton Benjamin has also shed further light on the differences he has seen in both companies.
While he has noticed the differences, he admitted that he is still trying to learn from the new system. Speaking on the same podcast, he said:
"So far I have noticed a lot of differences in their approach and things like that. And I’m still… I’m still learning their system. I’ve only been there what, a month? So I’m not going to learn everything I need to know in that time. But from what I’ve seen, I’m starting to understand there are some very very different ways of operation. That some I think are wonderful. Some I think are absolutely groundbreaking as far as the approach."
It will be interesting to see what kinds of things he will learn in his new company.
