A former WWE Smackdown Superstar and wrestling veteran recently admitted his confusion regarding Jon Moxley's current gimmick in AEW. The individual in question is Matt Morgan.
Jon Moxley unexpectedly returned to the Tony Khan-led promotion for the first time since Forbidden Door on Dynamite after All In 2024. He was revealed to have joined forces with Marina Shafir, accompanying her as The Problem attacked AEW talent and personnel.
The Purveyor of Violence seems intent on regaining the AEW World Championship after assaulting his long-time Blackpool Combat Club stablemate Bryan Danielson at All Out 2024 and later calling out Darby Allin to put his World Championship shot against The American Dragon on the line against Mox at Grand Slam 2024.
Moxley's recent performance as a heel has been a subject of discussions among fans and industry experts alike. On an episode of Gigantic Pop from a few days ago, wrestling veteran and former WWE Smackdown talent Matt Morgan was asked for his thoughts about The Ace of the World's current gimmick.
Former WWE writer buries Judgment Day HERE
The Blueprint replied by confessing that he had not grasped Moxley's present characterization. He revealed that he had to be informed that the gimmick was supposedly based on an old film.
"I don't... You had to tell me. Others had to tell me, others had to tell me what it was. I didn't understand it. It's based off some show or movie I never heard of or saw, so I didn't get it... I still don't get it," said Morgan. [48:40 - 48:53]
The movie referenced here is the 1992 Australian drama Romper Stomper, starring Russell Crowe. Morgan and his co-hosts alluded to a report from Bryan Alvarez from last month, in which he claimed that Moxley's recent character work is supposedly an adaptation of Crowe's performance in the film.
Tony Khan on Jon Moxley turning on AEW World Champ Bryan Danielson
During a recent conversation with Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan addressed Jon Moxley's shocking betrayal of Bryan Danielson at All Out 2024. The All Elite Head of Creative spoke about The Dragon winning the 2024 Owen Hart Cup and being motivated by Jeff Jarrett's words to go all in at All In 2024 to become the new AEW World Champion.
He defended the belt against Jack Perry at All Out this month but, unfortunately, was laid out by Claudio Castagnoli and Moxley, with the latter suffocating Bryan with a plastic bag over his head in what Khan dubbed a "life-altering" incident.
Bryan Danielson is scheduled to wrestle his former ROH rival Nigel McGuinness at Grand Slam 2024 on the condition that he is cleared for in-ring competition.
