AEW personality Tony Schiavone has been in the wrestling business for a very long time. He recently gave his honest thoughts about a WWE legend.
Bret Hart is widely regarded as one of the best technical wrestlers of all time. He was instrumental in breaking the mold of what a professional wrestler should look like. Back in his time, the top world champions were all big muscular men. Massive wrestlers like Hulk Hogan and Bruno Sammartino ruled the world of professional wrestlers.
Bret Hart was one of the first wrestlers to show the world that size does not matter when he finally won the WWF Championship in 1992. As a result, he became an inspiration for the next generation of wrestlers.
Speaking on a recent episode of 'What Happened When?' Tony Schiavone admitted that he didn't think Bret would be a world champion but was proven wrong.
"I thought Vince looked for the big, big guy; the big guys like Hulk Hogan. I thought Bret was great, a great technical wrestler but I didn't think he'd be a world champion – I was wrong," said Tony Schiavone. [H/T Wrestling Inc.]
Tony Schiavone said that Bret Hart didn't distinguish himself from The Hart Foundation
Bret Hart first gained recognition as part of The Hart Foundation alongside Jim Neidhart and Jimmy Hart. The trio first debuted in 1985 and even won the WWF Tag Team Championship twice. The group disbanded in 1991 before Hart's singles push. However, when The Hart Foundation broke up, Bret did little to distinguish himself from his past. He wore a similar colored attire that made it look like The Hart Foundation was still together.
Speaking on the same podcast, Tony Schiavone said that The Hart Foundation had a certain look about them and Bret Hart did nothing to distinguish himself from the group which hindered his career. He drew a comparison with Shawn Michaels who completely changed his look when he split up from his tag team partner, Marty Jannetty.
"Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart – together as the Hart Foundation – had a certain look about them. When they split off, Bret didn't change that look...Think about this: when Shawn Michaels broke away from The Rockers, he had a kind of new look, didn't he?" said Tony Schiavone. [H/T WrestlingInc.]
Regardless of whether he changed his look or not, Bret Hart still enjoyed a successful career in WWE.
