AEW has signed several top WWE Superstars over the years. Tony Khan launched with names like Chris Jericho and Jim Ross, but since then, he has signed names like Bryan Danielson and Mercedes Moné. One of AEW's biggest stars has a legendary history with the Stamford-based company, and now Sheamus is revealing inside details on a key creative situation.
Adam Copeland spent more than 25 years known as Edge in WWE. Now known as Cope in AEW, the inaugural Money in the Bank winner recently made his comeback from injury and is at the top of the card. Copeland had a few farewell scenarios with WWE over the years, but his final appearance for the company came on August 18, 2023, during a special SmackDown to celebrate his 25th anniversary. The 19-minute main event saw the WWE Hall of Famer defeat Sheamus for the first time ever in his hometown of Toronto.
The Celtic Warrior recently opened up on his special match with The Rated-R Superstar. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on INSIGHT, Sheamus revealed how he and Cope had discussed a potential storyline for some time, but it was dismissed, and then he got the call for the farewell match. The RAW Superstar also revealed the internal reactions to Copeland's status with the company.
"We talked about it. I remember we talked about doing an angle or a storyline together for a while. We came up with a storyline, it was shot down for whatever reason. And then it just happened. I just got a call, I think it was because we did a promo the week before, and then we did the match the week after. Edge’s contract was coming up. I didn’t know. No one knew if he was going to stay or go. No one really knew. I didn’t know. I thought he was going to stay, because we’re talking doing something after that as well. But yeah, it was just a situation," Sheamus said.

Sheamus also revealed how Damian Priest was originally set to wrestle the match with Edge, but then plans changed. He's still not sure how it happened, but he was surprised and excited, as this was their first-ever singles match.
