The Young Bucks have seen enormous success in AEW, but that doesn't mean that everything always goes smoothly for them. Matthew and Nicholas Jackson recently revealed just how rocky their last Tag Team Championship reign was and what finally convinced Tony Khan to put the titles on Private Party.
The Young Bucks won the vacant AEW World Tag Team Championship after Sting retired earlier this year. Their record third reign with the titles was marked by sporadic defenses and meandering rivalries that frustrated many fans.
The Bucks ultimately lost the titles to Private Party in October, but even that was a last-minute decision. In a recent appearance on Social Suplex Podcast Network's Tunnel Talk, the Jackson brothers opened up on their chaotic reign:
"This last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them, but creative changed I would say four-five different times in the last like six months," Nickolas Jackson said. "At one point, we were going to lose the belts to a certain team. And then a month later it changed to another team."
The brothers had to turn down Private Party's pitch for a long-term rivalry, but after the two teams put on an acclaimed match at WrestleDream, everything changed:
"And something changed and we ended up wrestling [Private Party] in a match [at WrestleDream]… but we tore the house down. As soon as we got backstage, we knew, ‘Oh alright.’ It’s in Tony’s eyes. He was like, ‘I think we have something, I think we have something.’ And Matt and I thought the same exact thing. We were like, ‘We’ve got to pivot. We’ve got to change our plans again.’ And that was like the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped. We were happy, though, because we wanted to put those guys over. They deserved the spotlight." [H/T F4W Online]

The Young Bucks had to scrap "Elite Roulette" idea due to NXT
Amid the fluctuating plans for their latest AEW World Tag Team Championship reign, The Young Bucks developed an idea to spin a roulette wheel that would determine their challengers each week. Unfortunately, they had to scrap it.
In the same interview, Matthew and Nicholas Jackson revealed that they received a text from Sonjay Dutt alerting them to NXT's revival of the "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal" concept ahead of Halloween Havoc 2024:
"This was set and sewn, and then one day, I think it was Sanjay [Dutt] who sent us a text and said, ‘Hey, hey, about your idea,’ and he sent me a thing, and it was like, I guess NXT was doing a Spin the Wheel, Make a Deal thing. Right? Oh no, you gotta start it like that special or something. We were like, ‘Dang.’"
After losing their World Tag Team Championship, The Young Bucks abandoned Jack Perry and AEW to escape the wrath of Jon Moxley and his Death Riders. The Jackson brothers are currently in Japan and are set to compete for the IWGP Tag Championship at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5.
