Jim Cornette criticizes Sting's retirement promo

Did AEW fumble Sting
Sting is a WWE Hall of Famer and current AEW star

Sting recently announced that his final wrestling match will take place at AEW Revolution 2024. Jim Cornette wasn't impressed with The Icon's promo, as he shared his thoughts on the segment.

The Revolution pay-per-view usually takes place in March every year, meaning Stinger's farewell bout is not far away. It is expected to be a grand affair, celebrating the remarkable career of the 64-year-old.

In a recent episode of Jim Cornette's Drive-Thru, the veteran manager explained why the abovementioned segment fell flat.

"Now I know why we never let him talk too long. The people love him, he’s an icon, [but] this was brutal. One of the biggest stars in the modern business; he’s gonna retire. I felt I had to watch this out of respect, but Jiminy Christmas!" said Cornette. (01:33 onward)

Dave Meltzer recently claimed he reached out to Tony Khan not too long ago and suggested modeling Stinger's retirement after The Great Muta's farewell tour, which took place earlier this year. You can read more about it here.

Jim Cornette feels Sting's strength never lied in his promo skills

The Icon's original gimmick was much more lively than his Crow-themed persona. But even then, he was better known for his in-ring performances than his promos.

In the same episode, Cornette recalled what made The Icon great in the past and why it didn't translate into last week's promo.

"Sting has never had a great promo voice [but] when he was young, and he had the body, and the hair, and the howl, and ‘It’s showtime!’ and the energy – that carried it."

Cornette further explained why promos may not be The Icon's strong suit:

"But having to give a long or detailed explanation? Having to have something flow? Going a long period of time? These are not and have never been Sting’s strengths." (02:18 onward)

It remains to be seen if the legend will compete in a tag team match at Revolution 2024 or if his retirement bout will be his first singles match in years.
