Legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross could be looking at retirement after this year, but the 72-year-old likely has several big events left to call before he hangs up his hat. The WWE Hall of Famer provided an update on his current status in AEW.
Jim Ross has called some of the most iconic moments in the history of pro wrestling. Unfortunately, he's been dealing with health issues for the last couple of years, but he's made himself available for All Elite Wrestling's big pay-per-view events, including Sting's final match at AEW Revolution last month.
JR recently signed a one-year contract to remain with AEW, but he isn't making flights to weekly television at the moment. On the latest episode of Grilling JR podcast, the legend claimed that Tony Khan has directed him to sit in the commentary booth at pay-per-views for now.
Ross is excited about AEW's upcoming events, especially this Sunday's Dynasty pay-per-view in St. Louis:
Corey Graves deleted his Tweet! More details HERE.
"Tony’s got me doing pay-per-views. At least that’s the plan today and I hope it stays that way because I have something to look forward to. They’re big events. That card for St. Louis, my God. That son of a b*tch is star-studded. man. It’s like a major major pay-per-view, which it’s what it is." [H/T Ringside News]
Jim Ross signed a new contract with AEW earlier this year
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross initially signed a three-year deal with AEW in early 2019, shortly after the company was founded. Despite being a legendary name in the business, he was familiar with several All Elite talents, having called Kenny Omega's NJPW matches on AXS TV for a few years prior.
JR spent a couple of years in the booth on AEW Dynamite, but after he was diagnosed with skin cancer, his appearances became less frequent.
Last month on Grilling JR, he revealed that this might be his last year at the desk. He's signed a brand new contract with Tony Khan's company, which will keep him around through 2024.
"I'll be back to do more work. I assume it's going to be centered around the pay-per-view. I think we're down for another year. That's plenty. I'm happy with it. Tony Khan stepped up. Term wise, financial package wise, everything was to my liking," said Ross.
Ross also praised Tony Khan, calling the contract negotiation the quickest and easiest of his 50-year career.
